The event will also be ASL interpreted so it’s accessible to more members of our community.

General Assembly 227 Report

What a ride that was the 227^th General Assembly (GA). At times it was a roller coaster with plenty of ups and downs and twists and turns. Other times felt like a traffic jam - stalled by questions about the rules of the road (Roberts Rules that is). But somehow, we managed to cross the finish line together with a map for the next two years.

CHIPP Program

On July 9 First Presbyterian was honored for participating in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s CHIPP (Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack) program. During the month of March we collected food items that were assembled into backpacks and shared with children in District 186. The packs were used to supplement food on weekends and during school breaks. Over the past four years this program provided 3,360 CHIPP bags, 480 CHIPP boxes totaling 3,840 food packages for children and families. We are proud to have joined forces with 28 church and community partners in supporting this program. 

Devotional to Sancti Spiritus

I have been particularly encouraged by Psalm 23 for the last 3-4 months.  I have read it over and over again, in many different versions. Each version brings to mind different reactions to the variety of words in a verse.  

For instance: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want conjures up different reactions to The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing else that I need. Another version says I shall not be in want.  Here are a few more-- I have everything I need. I have all that I need.  I lack nothing. And so on and so on. 

In the process of rereading Psalm 23, I found a book written by a man who grew up in a nomadic lifestyle and acquired a flock of sheep as a young adult. He applied oil to the head of a sheep to stop the ever present pests that love to torment sheep. I also learned that sheep are totally helpless and vulnerable on their backs when all four legs are in the air.  A good shepherd makes sure sheep aren't prey by uprighting the animal. The good shephard removes all poisonous weeds from the grazing area and guards against predators throughout the night. The shepherd takes care of everything to assure comfort, peace, tranquility, calmness, and to restore the sheep's strength. Certainly God chooses to call Himself the shepherd and humanity the sheep for good reason.  We would be lost without Him.  

These thoughts give me pause on what my son or my friends need from me. I need to listen, to comfort, to support them when they fall, to be compassionate when they're in a dark valley, to encourage when tormented and to love unconditionally.  

Gently Used Books Needed

We are now ready to start filling the beautiful FREE book library in the Commons. If you have any gently used books that have been inspiring to you and you would like to share them bring them to the church and put them in the book library.

Per Capita is a way Presbyterians share equally, responsibly, and interdependently in the costs of governing the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), no matter the size of their churches. Per capita contributions are requested from every congregation and are based on each church’s total active membership.

2026 Per Capita: $39 per member          

GA: $11.26   Synod: $3.81 PGR: $23.93  based on 12/31/2024 final reported membership numbers

Thanks to everyone whose donations keep this vital ministry going. Any and all are welcome to donate food items. Simply place them in the cabinet. Please note that our partners at Grace Food Pantry bring a number of items to our micropantry every Thursday. 

Many people are being served through our micropantry and during the summer months they often need water. Please avoid placing glass containers in the cabinet.

Nursery

The nursery is available for parents to use with their little ones. You are free to use the nursery on Sunday mornings and during church events. Child care is not provided at this time so you will need to stay with your child while there.

We encourage members and friends of First Presbyterian to call the church office to let us know when you go to the hospital so Pastor Susan and Chaplain Tim can provide pastoral support if it blesses you. We do not share any information without permission.
