MASKS

We encourage those who might be vulnerable to wear masks

and anyone with symptoms to join worship via Zoom.

Here are a few items for our Q+ Community:

  • In the beginning we referred to ourselves as the Q+ Working Group. The group is composed of Q+ individuals and allies. I think we have evolved beyond just a working group and have become a community within our larger church community. So, moving forward, we will refer to this group as the First Presbyterian Church Q+ Community.
  • In case you missed it, Denise Bockmier-Sommers and Frank Schultz have agreed to lead and/or facilitate the activities of our community.
  • DON'T FORGET LUNCH JANUARY 25!! Almost 20 folks have RSVP'd! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow at Bella Milano at 11:30 a.m.
  • Save the date: March 15 is the annual semi-formal gala and fundraiser for CORAL called the Ritz. Please let me know if you are planning to attend. If we have 8 or more attending we can get our own table. Tickets are $70. Please let Tim know ASAP if you are planning to attend.
  • News from PCUSA: Chaplain Tim currently serves on PCUSA's Advocacy Committee for Q+ Equity. As we see more Q+ setbacks in Congress and the Courts, the committee will be responding. Last week the House of Representatives passed a vicious anti-trans law called the "Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act". This cruelty cannot go unanswered. The committee publishing a statement found here: https://www.pcusa.org/news-storytelling/news/advocacy-committee-lgtbqia-equity-urges-opposition-recent-house-bill One of the President's executive orders effectively erases trans, non-binary, and intersex individuals by proclaiming that there are only males and females. This link will take you to the committee's response: https://www.pcusa.org/news-storytelling/news/advocacy-committee-lgbtqia-equity-lambasts-trump-executive-order
  • Any ideas? Please let me, Frank, or Denise know if you have any ideas for how this community to be of help to you, your family and our larger church community.

Cuba

Sadly, Cuba is now back on the state sponsors of terrorism list. Please continue to lift up our Cuban kin in prayer.

Friday, January 31, the Nordic Choir of Luther College (Decorah, Iowa), will perform a concert at Grace Lutheran Church!

Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Last, Luther College Nordic Choir is touring in our area from their campus in the beautiful northeast Iowa town of Decorah. Nordic Choir is one of the finest collegiate ensembles in the nation and performs a variety of music, both accompanied and acapella, with precision and emotion. The choir has been selected to perform at the National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in March and is pleased to share their program with regional audiences before appearing at the conference in Texas. There are no tickets required for this concert; freewill donations will be collected to offset the travel expenses incurred by the choir.

Hospital Notices

Please note that the hospitals no longer contact local churches to let them know when a member is admitted. We encourage members and friends of First Presbyterian to call the church office to let us know when you go to the hospital so Pastor Susan and Chaplain Tim can provide pastoral support if it blesses you. We do not share any information without permission.

Coffee Fellowship

We are always grateful for coffee fellowship hosts. If you would like to volunteer please sign up in the commons. If you are interested in hosting but don't want to do it by yourself please let Michelle know and we can find a partner for you. Thank you to the Earth Care team for hosting last week. We look forward to Colleen hosting this Sunday.

In order to ensure your gift is credited to the correct fund, please take a moment to include the following information when making a donation:

  1. Writing a check – Add the fund name in the memo section (Capital Campaign, Peacemaking, Samaritan Ministry, etc.)
  2. Online portal – Select “Other Donations” when entering the amount then enter the name of the fund in the Notes section
  3. Text giving – Text “$10 CC” to 217-284-2546, this example is a $10 donation for the Capitol Campaign fund. Other commonly used text codes are: Pledge, SM (Samaritan Ministries), Donate (Non-pledge), Peace, Joy, OGHS, Pentecost and BB (Brown Bag)
