November, 2024 | Newsletter Volume 2

Welcome to our second edition of Good Counsel! I am happy to report on some of the exciting news at Ave Maria School of Law since our last newsletter, beginning with our first-year class. In recent years, we have averaged approximately 100 students per class, except for one “COVID” year when the number was around 120. This year we welcomed 135 first years, a 35% increase in class size over the previous year. Importantly, the large entering class also had better LSAT scores and GPA’s as a group than in previous years. A larger, even better-qualified class is a Law Dean’s dream!

There have been recent news stories that indicate that religious schools are drawing larger numbers of students than non-religious schools. We believe this to be the case. Although it is too early to validate a trend, applications are significantly higher at Ave Maria School of Law this year over last. We believe that young people today more than ever crave truth, beauty, and the good, and are seeking schools that emphasize those transcendental values. At the ONLY American law school recognized by the Newman Guide as a genuinely Catholic school, we are the place for aspiring lawyers to satisfy that craving. Our record employment statistics demonstrate that employers – not just students – recognize the importance of an Ave Maria School of Law education.

In short, Ave Maria School of Law is a wonderful place to be this fall, and we would love to see you on campus for a visit, or just to say hello. Please enjoy the articles and pictures in this edition of Good Counsel, and do not hesitate to contact us!

John M. Czarnetzky

Chief Executive Officer and Dean

From Our Chaplain

I am very grateful for the warm and joyful welcome I received when I arrived here at the law school this past summer. It’s a great blessing for me, as a priest, to live and work here, where faith in Christ is approached with such honesty and integrity.

I have been happy and impressed with the enthusiastic response of the students to the schedule of daily Mass and weekly confession and Adoration. I have also been inspired by the student groups, such as the Legion of Mary, whose members include local recent alumni of the law school who return each week to join in prayer. At the request of the students, I was happy to begin a weekly Scripture reflection and discussion group, and also monthly meetings of Theology on Tap, where we can discuss theological topics or the inspiration of the saints. Since I don’t begin teaching in the law curriculum until next semester, I was also happy to begin a series of monthly spiritual reflections on the theme of the Annunciation, in honor of Our Lady after whom our Law School is named. It did not take long, either, before I was asked to begin helping some of our law students prepare for the sacrament of marriage. There are many great spiritual things happening here at Ave Maria School of Law, and I’m blessed to be part of them. And I thank both Our Lord and Our Lady for the blessing of this assignment as chaplain.

Red Mass

Invoking the Holy Spirit, Bishop Frank J. Dewane recently placed in prayer under the care of God’s grace and providence the legal professionals within the Diocese of Venice. Bishop Dewane made these remarks during a Red Mass celebrated on Oct. 16, 2024, at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples. The Mass was attended by many students and faculty of Ave Maria School of Law.

Moot Court Board Update

The Moot Court Board (MC) is a competitive, co-curricular course offering academic credit, taught and graded by a professor. Membership is open exclusively to 2L and 3L students, and admission is competitive, with strong grades, exceptional legal research and writing skills, and effective public speaking abilities being key factors for selection. Our team is comprised of 30 members, evenly divided between 2L and 3L students.

At MC, we engage in a wide range of activities. One of our signature events is organizing and hosting the AML intramural moot court competition, named in honor of AML founder and prominent conservative legal scholar, Judge Robert Bork. This competition is open to all AML students, with the finals scheduled for November 16, 2024 in the Donum Dei Moot Courtroom.

In addition to hosting competitions, we represent AML in moot court tournaments across the country, competing against other law schools in both appellate and trial settings. This year, our team will participate in competitions hosted by institutions such as Notre Dame, the New York Bar, the Scalia School of Law, Seton Hall, Tulane, Georgetown, and the State Bar of Florida. Topics covered include Religious Liberty, International Law, Evidence, and Constitutional Law.

Our Speakers Series is another integral part of the MC experience, featuring presentations for members on key legal topics. Recently, Dean Milliron and Professor Fleetham led a session on Legal Research and Brief Writing.

We are also working on the latest edition of The Gavel, which will focus on Election Law and is set to be published this spring.

Beyond the academic and competitive aspects, MC provides invaluable litigation experience and fosters lasting friendships among members. We also host occasional social events. Notably, moot court experience is highly sought after by legal recruiters, giving our members an edge as they enter the legal profession.

Business Law Fellows Sabrina Martinez and Tara Powers represented the BLI at the fall meeting of the ABA’s Business Law Section in San Diego, California.

Already halfway through the fall semester of the new academic year, the Coach Rod Smith Business Law Institute has been very busy with activities and events both on and off campus.

This year, the BLI has launched its first-ever Fall Semester Speaker Series. This initiative gives second-year Fellows the chance to hear from third-year Fellows and local industry leaders on important current business law issues. Thus far, the 3Ls have shared valuable insights on their summer externship experiences and their individual research topics. In tandem with those presentations, the BLI was pleased to host Professors Louis Amato and Charles Cohen, who spoke on bankruptcy law and securities regulation, respectively.

In early September, Professor Connolly and 2L Fellow Megan Howard represented the BLI at the Southwest Florida Federal Courts Bar Association, where they connected with judges and practitioners from the Middle District of Florida.

Ms. Howard also participated in and volunteered at the South Florida Association of Corporate Counsel’s Annual CLE Conference in Miami, where she networked with in-house counsel from across the state.

In mid-September, 3L Fellows Sabrina Martinez and Tara Powers represented the BLI at the fall meeting of the ABA’s Business Law Section in San Diego, California.

In honor of Constitution Day, Professor Connolly and BLI Fellows gave a presentation to Cape Coral high school students on the Constitution and the American justice system. This was a great opportunity to promote civic education and inspire the next generation of potential Ave Maria Law students.

Finally, our Ave Business Law Herald blog is continuing to produce some fantastic work, so please check out our recent articles at https://www.avemarialaw.edu/bli-herald/. If you would like to be featured as a guest blogger, please reach out to associate editor Cecilia Berutti at cberutti@avemarialaw.edu

The 2024-2025 academic year has been off to an exciting start, and we look forward to more events and opportunities throughout the year. The BLI will continue to work to enrich our community and empower our students to achieve successful careers in law and business. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress through the semester!

Ave Maria School of Law Ranks 2nd Nationally for Employment Improvement

Ave Maria School of Law is proud to announce a major achievement—ranking second in the nation for improved employment outcomes, earning preLaw Magazine’s "Most Improved in Employment" award for 2024-2025! This accomplishment highlights the tireless efforts of our Office of Professional Development, led by Associate Dean Jill Backer, who has now received this recognition twice in her distinguished career.

Our unwavering commitment to delivering a rigorous legal education, deeply rooted in our Catholic mission, continues to produce graduates who excel in their careers and make meaningful contributions to their communities. The class of 2024 is already making impressive strides, with over 60% of graduates employed even before bar results are released, and more than 20% having taken the UBE in another state.

Over the past two years, our employment rates have averaged an impressive 85%. Not only are we surpassing expectations in Florida, but we’ve also consistently outperformed national employment averages.

The hard work of our Office of Professional Development is featured in the latest issue of preLaw Magazine. Read it here.

Celebrating the Importance of Pro Bono Work

The Office of Professional Development (OPD) celebrated the ABA’s National Pro Bono Week from October 20th to 26th. OPD set up two information tables in the Commons and Administration buildings, where students learned about ongoing pro bono opportunities. All class levels are encouraged participated. Ave Maria School of Law (AMSL) offers a Pro Bono Recognition Program, recognizing students who complete at least 50 hours of pro bono work during their time at the school. Additional opportunities can be found on Symplicity, including the chance to mentor teens in the Collier and Lee County Teen Court programs. For more details, the Pro Bono Guide is available on Ave Central.

Pro bono work aligns with AMSL’s mission to respect human dignity and serve the common good. It allows students to gain practical experience, develop legal skills, and build their professional networks while making a positive impact. As an added incentive, the first student who completes the most approved pro bono hours between October 20th and November 15th and uploads the signed hours log in Symplicity will win a $50 gift card. National Pro Bono Week is a great time to get involved and explore opportunities to make a difference.

Legal Student Intern Core Estate Planning

We extend our congratulations to Doug Thomas (3L) and Nicolas Ruggeri (3L) for their outstanding presentation on Core Estate Planning at the Baker Senior Center this past Tuesday. As part of the Estate Planning and General Practice Clinic, our student legal interns have the opportunity to engage with the community by giving presentations, volunteering at Legal Aid of Collier County’s Wills for Heroes event, and working directly with clients to assist with their estate planning needs.

Students consistently share that this hands-on experience is one of the highlights of their law school journey, allowing them to apply what they’ve learned while making a real impact in the community. We are deeply grateful to our valued community partners, including Legal Aid of Collier County and the Baker Senior Center, for offering these invaluable opportunities.

Honor Flight

The Veterans Law Student Association attended the Collier-Lee Honor Flight's Mission 27 Welcome Home Celebration at Southwest Florida International Airport on September 28, 2024. Collier-Lee Honor Flight's mission is to transport local veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice. Support for these trips is provided by volunteers and is at no cost to the veterans. Top priority is given to our most senior veterans - survivors of WWII and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit their memorial.

VLSA made posters with messages from Ave Law expressing our appreciation for the veterans’ service to our country. While it is an emotional endeavor, both for the veterans and those that are participating in the welcome home, it is a heartwarming experience knowing that many of these veterans never received a welcome home from war and are now celebrated by people representing multiple generations.

This was VLSA’s third semester participating in the event, with participation expanding to include parents, spouses, and children of Ave participants.
