If you didn't have a sense of what the school, and indeed the entire Lower Bay community, had been through, it might not be clear why Devvy's heart was singing. The school had been damaged to the point where they weren't sure if they could have students back to start the new school year. One of the buildings, the grade four class, had to be removed, as it was beyond repair. The others needed new roofs, and the main building needed the learning spaces rebuilt.
These photos show some of the repairs, but also a lot of hope and joy, too. The roofs, a gorgeous blue, are new.
Not shown are the people who came forward to help, or who offered spaces for the students to learn in while the repairs were being made. Also not shown are all the students who are now fully engaged in their academic year.
The Grenadines Initiative was happy, on behalf of our donors, to make these repairs a reality. We're happy to have also been able to distribute food vouchers, and there are more of those to come. We've supplied materials to repair family homes, and have sent supplies to Canouan to help with the recovery efforts there.
Devvy noted in her text that there is more to come, and that's true. It's a process. But seeing her photos, knowing the spirit and support behind them, our hearts are singing, too.
