Dear Friends,
Christmas on the border reminds us that Jesus crossed the divine/human border to enter fully into the joys and suffering of our world, to bring light into darkness, hope into despair, and life abundant into a world surrounded by death.
Two and a half years ago, a man guided by hate and the belief that God cannot call women or LGBTQ persons to ministry set fire to the buildings of First Presbyterian Church and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Douglas, Arizona.
"Today, after fire and rebuilding, after pain and renewal, we come remembering that God's grace is stronger than hate, and that His love gathers us as one body," Pastor Peggy Christiansen shared, in the invitation to the Lord's Table, as First Presbyterian Church gathered to dedicate their restored fellowship hall for the service of God and the community.
In February, they realized that they would be about $100,000 short of the funds needed for their rebuilding and asked Frontera de Cristo (FDC) to organize a capital campaign: "Out of the Ashes We Rise with God." (Watch Video) And because of the generosity of churches and individuals like you, the church surpassed its goal by June. What a joy to join together with them in celebrating this renewed life and ministry and the dedication of their Agape Fellowship Hall! (See images from this weekend's celebration).
In late November, our partners at Centro al Migrante “Exodus” (CAME) asked FDC to support them in a capital campaign to raise $56,000 to help them deal with the loss of a couple of international grants partially caused by the increased demonization of migrants. The FDC board of directors responded with an enthusiastic "YES" to support CAME in maintaining their vital ministry. We ask you to prayerfully consider generously supporting CAME in making sure they can keep their doors of compassion and welcome open as we enter this season where we remember Mary and Joseph, and continue to seek Room in the Inn.
Peace,
Miriam Maldonado and Mark Adams
