Dear friends,
"We are living in a time of great fear ... families are fearing being separated," shared a pastor of a bilingual partner church in Phoenix in the sermon on Sunday, "but even so we live in the hope of the resurrection, in the hope that love is more powerful than hate."
"We are in the midst of complicated and difficult times," Pastor René Espinoza, president of the FDC board, shared at our weekly reflections this morning, "and we need to put our trust in God and not in the powers of this world."
"I just heard about the White House creating a new military base extending from California across Arizona and into New Mexico. I take it educational and liturgical events to the wall on the US side will not longer be possible. How has the Frontera de Cristo ministry been affected?" read an email from a partner in Iowa. (Click here to read response).
"We are going to have to cancel our delegation this year because we think it is too dangerous for our international students with the US revoking student visas," lamented a chaplain of a school who has led delegations to the border for 15 years. (A church cancelled a delegation to the border for the same reason.)
In the midst of these challenging times, we continue to choose welcome. Even as our government is increasingly letting dehumanization and demonization become the guiding lights of our border and immigration policy, let us join together and embody the radical values of Jesus loving, welcoming and accompanying our neighbors who are most vulnerable in our communities.
