Cultivating Relationships

and Understanding

Across Borders

Frontera de Cristo collaborators met at Café Justo y Mas to receive their Migrant Ministries certificates awarded by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary

Dear friends,

"We are living in a time of great fear ... families are fearing being separated," shared a pastor of a bilingual partner church in Phoenix in the sermon on Sunday, "but even so we live in the hope of the resurrection, in the hope that love is more powerful than hate."

"We are in the midst of complicated and difficult times," Pastor René Espinoza, president of the FDC board, shared at our weekly reflections this morning, "and we need to put our trust in God and not in the powers of this world."

"I just heard about the White House creating a new military base extending from California across Arizona and into New Mexico. I take it educational and liturgical events to the wall on the US side will not longer be possible. How has the Frontera de Cristo ministry been affected?" read an email from a partner in Iowa. (Click here to read response).

"We are going to have to cancel our delegation this year because we think it is too dangerous for our international students with the US revoking student visas," lamented a chaplain of a school who has led delegations to the border for 15 years. (A church cancelled a delegation to the border for the same reason.)

In the midst of these challenging times, we continue to choose welcome. Even as our government is increasingly letting dehumanization and demonization become the guiding lights of our border and immigration policy, let us join together and embody the radical values of Jesus loving, welcoming and accompanying our neighbors who are most vulnerable in our communities.

Expanding Hearts and Minds

by Marina Forero, Director, Children's Enrichment Ministry

EIGHT YEARS AGO, FRONTERA DE CRISTO BEGAN the Children’s Enrichment Ministry as a faith response to the drug culture that was targeting younger and younger children not only to consume drugs but to get involved in the trafficking of drugs. While all children are welcome here, we are especially focused on children who are at risk of dropping out of elementary school.

For eight years, girls and boys have been coming, growing, and developing together with us. The light they carry in each game, smile, restlessness, creativity, and ingenuity is bright. Even in times of adversity they are resilient and get up again to gain strength and continue in their mission to be happy.

PTS Offers Certificate in Migrant Ministries

PITTSBURGH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY (PTS) HAS ESTABLISHED a new short-term study program comprising three modules in migrant ministries: Intercultural Studies, Migration and the Theology of Migration, and Accompaniment and Advocacy. The course is limited to approximately 40 students who meet by Zoom weekly for two semesters. The first cohort completed their studies this month. Check out their class schedule on PTS's web site and inquire about joining the 2025/26 cohort.

You can read about Frontera de Cristo's involvement with the new program in a blog post on Substack by the Rev. Dr. Hunter Farrell, who leads this new joint initiative of PTS and the PCUSA.

Let Us Not Grow Weary in Doing Good

by Pastor Lorena Ocampo Campos

WHAT A CHALLENGING REQUEST!

In the early years of the Christian Church, the apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, gets a glimpse of a reality that has not lost relevance over the time, even in its complex modernity. I am referring to the ideal of an inclusive and loving church that aims to communicate the grace of God, despite the factors against it. However, social, political, or cultural pressures often tax the soul’s strength, causing tiredness that can be translated into frustration or discouragement.

Questions such as “Has my struggle to do good been worth it?” “Are there any concrete results that can help me to not give up on my work?” “Has the time come to close my eyes, keep quiet, pretend and believe that God really does not care if I give up on my task?” The questions resonate like an echo through my Christian labor.
