Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Café Justo y Más

Dear Friends,

On at our Wednesday staff biblical reflection and prayer time last week, we read Genesis 18 where Abraham runs out to invite three strangers in from the heat of the day and receiving a direct message from God. In Abraham's day, providing hospitality was a life and death reality and it was an expected cultural practice.

Throughout Jesus' life and ministry, he embodied hospitality and reminds us that when we welcome a stranger, we welcome him and when we do not receive a stranger, we do not receive him.

Providing hospitality continues to be a life and death practice today but our culture and government has increasingly defined the stranger as a danger to reject as opposed to a human being created in the divine image and a blessing to welcome. Walls and laws have been created to endanger persons in transit and criminalize them as well as those who provide them hospitality.

We are grateful for your encouragement, prayers, and support that help us create welcoming spaces for strangers to become friends, women, men and children to cultivate their gifts, and persons struggling with addiction to experience hope and healing.

May we have the courage to choose welcome each day.

IN THE FALL OF 2015, Frontera de Cristo had a vision of starting a children’s enrichment center and working with Café Justo and CRREDA drug rehab center to start a coffee shop. The ministry had a vision, but did not yet have the personnel necessary to make it possible. In such as time as that, the Mennonite Central Committee Mexico asked Frontera de Cristo if we would like to have two of their mission workers, an educator and a pastor/administrator come and be a part of the Frontera de Cristo family.

God's Creation, Government's Destruction

On a Saturday in May, a friend and I got lost in the beautiful and remote San Rafael Valley on our way to a happening organized by Sky Island Alliance, Borderlands Sierra Club and the Mandrean Archipelago Wildlife Center. We took a wrong turn and went on a road that washed out about a quarter mile from the border. We heard the droning of machinery and walked down a wash and over a hill and ran into where our government is spending millions of dollars to wall off a 24 miles section of one of the last migratory corridors for animals along the Arizona/Sonora border.

We are at historic lows in human migration between ports of entry, but even when we were at all-time highs this corridor was very rarely if ever transited by humans because of its remoteness and lack of transportation infrastructure on the south side.

Our spending of billions of dollars all across the US/Mexico border ($46 billions more were passed in the 2025 Big "Beautiful" Bill), extracting resources, irrevocably scaring the earth, destroying sacred sites of teh indigenous, pumping precious water to make cement and to keep dust down on roads we built (providing new infrastructure that will be used not only by border patrol but also potentially smuggling organizations) is IMMORAL and a sin against God, Creation, and humanity.
