November 2020
A Message from Debbie Wagner, CEO
Happy November everyone!

I hope that you all were able to enjoy the beautiful and rare Halloween Blue moon this past Saturday. It was a special time at the Clubs where our in-person young people could dress as their favorite characters, paint their faces and enjoy a socially distanced Halloween party. For members who are not with us in-person at this time, all of the Clubs hosted drive through give-aways of Halloween goodie bags for them to enjoy at home. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was, during this time of challenge for us all, to hear the sounds of our kids laughing and experiencing the pure joy of being kids!!

We know all too well the emotional and physical challenges that our BGCT youth and their families are facing during this on-going stretch of uncertainty and it’s inspiring to see our youth enjoy some moments of fun.

Our six Clubhouses have continued to serve our community by providing full day distance learning and BGCT programming from 8a-6pm as well as virtual offerings plus Club On-the-Go Activity Kit distribution to keep us connected to our members still at home. We are committed to continuing our full day schedules through November as we assess demand and capacity while districts continue to start their new hybrid schedules.

The emotional well-being of members and staff have been at the forefront of our minds. Clubs have responded to the current environment with increased Mental Health First-Aid and Trauma-Informed Care trainings for our teams linked to our understanding that isolation and trauma due to the pandemic may cause long-term effects for our young people. Many of us, including our kids, are experiencing social-emotional challenges due to Covid and the adverse conditions it has created for so many. Read on to learn more about how we continue to respond proactively in the Clubs...

Our annual Party with a Purpose, on December 5th, will be virtual this year and will have significant meaning as we honor special BGCT ambassador - the late, great Lute Olson and his wonderful wife Kelly. Please consider supporting this important end of year fundraiser by purchasing tickets, donating auction items or becoming a host house. Learn more at BGCTucson.org.

Thank you for your support and partnership as we work to improve the lives of children and families that need us most right now.

With deep appreciation,
Debbie

In the Clubs
Fall Membership and Distance Learning - November
The Clubs will continue to serve our community Monday through Friday with extended hours of 8:00am until 6:00pm. Every Club is staffed with amazing Youth Development Professionals who are ready to support youth with virtual learning linked to their schools. After our members complete their school day, the Clubs will engage them in recreation, art and other enrichment activities focused on their development.
Responding to the Emotional Health of Our Members
In order to fulfill our mission of enabling all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens, the Clubs are integrating trauma-informed approaches into their programming.

Earlier this month, Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson began training - all Club Teams are moving through professional development and training opportunities to equip them with effectively supporting young people moving through the pandemic, virtual school, feelings of disconnection and isolation.

These training opportunities were made possible in thanks to Board member Greg Taylor, in partnership with AZ Complete Health.

Party with a Purpose Signature Event
- In Tribute to Coach Lute Olson
Saturday, December 5th at 5pm
On this special occasion, you are invited to join us at one of our host-homes or virtually from the comfort of your own home. The evening will include a cocktail reception, short program featuring a "virtual" silent and live auction, followed by an amazing dinner from North Italia.

Our goal for the evening is to raise the much needed funds to keep Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson's doors open to the youth who need us most during these critical times.

Through the generous support of donors like you, the Clubs have been able to provide affordable all-day distance learning options for working families, virtual programming for remote learning, as well as supplemental Club On-the-Go Activity Kits since in-school learning ended earlier this year.

Join us in creating great futures and continuing our mission to provide young people in our community, especially those who need us most, with a clear path to reach their full potential and pursue their dreams.

Other Ways to Support the Clubs
Help Tucson’s Youth and Accrue Tax Benefits
The CARES Act, designed to help the nation recover from the pandemic, has five important implications for charitable giving.

  1. New Charitable Deduction for Non-Itemizers: Taxpayers who take the standard deduction can claim a charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash donations in 2020.
  2. Higher Deduction Limits: Individuals will be able to deduct cash gifts in 2020 to the extent of their entire adjusted gross income (AGI) rather than a cap at 60%.
  3. Increased Deduction Limits for Corporations: The contribution limit for corporations has been raised to 25% for cash contributions this year.
  4. Required Minimum Distributions Waived: For the year 2020, there will be no mandatory distributions from retirement accounts, thus allowing those accounts to recover. Once they do recover, retirement funds are a tax-wise giving strategy.
  5. Waiver of Penalties When Retirement Funds Are Used for Coronavirus Purposes: If you are under the age of 59½ and withdraw money from your retirement plan to cover expenses incurred by you or a family member related to the treatment of the Coronavirus, the 10% tax penalty will not apply. In the future you may consider a retirement fund gift.

Please reach out to Jill Long, VP of Fund Development to discuss what type of gift may make sense for your situation. Jill can be reached via email at jlong@bgctucson.org or direct line 520.308.3332.

Information provided above does not substitute for the advice of your tax advisor or attorney. Please see your tax advisor or attorney for full advice on implications of the CARES Act.
