Good News Wednesday

Preparing for the New School Year

On June 9, Gordon Parks families, teachers and volunteers started the new school year off with a gathering in the gym. Families had an opportunity to sign important enrollment documents, get information on the school year and meet their child's teacher.

Gathering Together for Story Time

As Gordon Parks students return from summer break for the new school year, the importance of reading cannot be overstated. Principal Dr. Kent Yocum and Vice Principal Dr. Sean Klippel take turns reading to the Ms. Cahill's 3rd grade classroom.

Diving into the School Year with the 4th Grade!

Mr. Brickner's 4th grade class demonstrate how quickly they can concentrate on the lesson at hand and follow expectations by working collaboratively.

Getting Settled into Kindergarten

Kindergarten students showed off the hand outlines they made after reading the book The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. The Kissing Hand is the story of Chester Raccoon, who is terrified to tears at the thought of starting kindergarten and being away from his home, his mother and his usual activities. His mother reassures him about all the good things he will find at school, including new friends, toys, and books.

Second Graders Practice Valuable Skills

Ms. Smith's second grade class began the year learning to follow written prompts. Each group worked together to create the picture that a card was "prompting" them to draw/color. This is a lesson in following directions and learning how to work together.

Hello Ollie!

Ms. Watkins' 1st grade class welcomed the chance to see Oliver - one of Gordon Parks' emotional support assistants. For the first time this school year, Ollie trained for his important role. His owner and handler, Mike Carroll, taught the children how to interact with him.
