Youth Group News
St. Mark’s Youth for Christ is on summer break, but will meet again Sunday, September 27, from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm in Room 18, and on the fourth Sunday of every month thereafter through June. Young people in the 6th - 12th grade are invited to join us as we support each other in our Christian journeys and serve our church community and beyond.

Bishop’s Reception, August 1, 11-2PM, at St. Paul’s Pomona

St. Paul’s Pomona is preparing a menu of fried chicken, salad, desserts for 150 people featuring a cake with all our church logos. We will gather for prayer in the sanctuary at 10AM then move to the courtyard for a delicious meal and time to be with our new bishop.
The bishop’s reception will start with a short prayer service for the bishop in the sanctuary on their portable labyrinth. Church banners will be used to adorn the sanctuary. Because of the focus on hospitality, there will be no special music nor choir.
Dress: Comfortable. Consider wearing your church name tag.

St. Mark’s Represented at Upland Pride Festival
St. Mark’s Church was well represented at the First Annual Upland Pride Festival on Sunday, June 28, at Upland Memorial Park. We had a good number of visitors to our booth who were interested in finding a welcoming local faith community. Thanks to Kimberly Cortner, Kathy Osterkamp, Brandon Hewgill, Rev. Keith, and Carol Morgan who manned our booth.

The Book Exchange Is Back!
Browse the selection of books on the cart in the Parish Hall, and bring gently used books to share. The book exchange originally started several years ago from the collection of the late Rev. Jonathan T. Glass, St. Mark's Rector from 1989 to 1995. The Creation Care Ministry is helping to bring the exchange back for the rest of the summer, and hopefully longer, because the greenest book is the one that already exists.

The event will be live-streamed. And there is a watch party for the Deanery at Holy Trinity Covina.
Walk for Love and Truth & Seating/Installation, Sunday, July 12
All are welcome. The installation will start with a walk for Love and Truth at 2 p.m. from St. Paul’s Commons to St. John’s Cathedral, followed by an Evensong at the Cathedral at 4 p.m. Sunday Evensong will be a ticketed event that will also be live-streamed.

Learn American Sign Language (ASL)
Join us this summer to learn American Sign Language with Sylvia Otsuka.
This is a basic introduction to the language. No prior experience is needed. Learn the alphabet, greetings, and how to introduce yourself. Simple church related words and phrases will be included and can be used during your next church service. All ages are welcome, but children 12 years old or younger require an adult present.
Classes will be held on Sundays at 9:00 AM, through August 2, in room 16. Use of a device and internet at home will be helpful to practice between classes, but is not required.
Sylvia has a degree in Sign Language Interpreting, is a certified Educational Sign Language Interpreter and a credentialed American Sign Language teacher.

Join a conversation about the Bible, worship, church, discipleship, and more. We meet after the service for about 50 minutes. Questions welcome.

Bible Study Resumes in September
Join us for an in-person Lectio Divina Bible study, on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 to 10:30AM. Lectio is a contemplative method of reading the Bible. We will listen to an upcoming Sunday gospel lesson three times from different versions of the Bible and respond to a reflection question after each reading. Our time includes introductions, check-in, a break, and open discussion. Join us in room 16. All welcome.

Centering Prayer Group: Wednesdays, 7-8PM
Join us for Centering Prayer on Wednesday from 7 to 8PM in the Children's Chapel to the left of the altar. We start with a brief check-in and introductions. We review the process. We have 20 minutes for a quiet sit. Repeat the opportunity to share reflections and ask questions. After needed announcements, all is finished. All are welcome.

Fiber Arts Guild/Dress-A-Girl, August 12
If you sew by hand or machine, can use scissors or an iron, knit or crochet, join us 10am in room 18 just off the parish hall for our workshop. We will be making very simple shift style dresses for underprivileged girls around the world. We have completed 13 dresses. We look forward to making many more. We will also be creating prayer shawls, lap robes, and baby blankets for anyone that asks or needs one.
We received a wonderful and generous donation of beautiful fabric and 2 dress from Sola.

Collecting School Supplies for Foothill Family Shelter, July 12
Summer may have just begun, but it's already time to think of school supplies. Our Daughters of the King Sancta Sophia chapter is coordinating the donations of school supplies for our parish partner, Foothill Family Shelter. The congregation is invited to bring all varieties of school supplies, including backpacks, to church and place them in the FFS bin in the narthex. Please note: Backpacks should not have cartoon characters or logos. The collection drive will continue until July 12. Thank you for your generosity.

Grief and Loss Support Group, July 16
The Grief and Loss Support Group meets every other Thursday from 11:00 AM – noon in the Weber-Mason Library, located at the west end of the front office complex. The group will be an informal meeting of any who have suffered major loss. The goal of the group is to provide a safe place to be heard and to listen as participants express the feelings that come with loss. Participants will learn strategies for growing through grief and have a chance to make new friends who understand. Participants are encouraged to bring something to write on and write with. When over 99 percent of California’s sunflower sea stars mysteriously wasted away 10 years ago, an already stressed ecosystem unraveled.
Sunflower sea stars—Pycnopodia helianthoides—may look like a purely decorative feature of the ocean floor, but they’re voracious predators. As adults, they can grow up to 24 arms, span three feet wide, and move three feet per minute. They are superlative, and alien—one of the largest and arguably most ravenous sea stars in the world.
But at the end of 2013, a colossal marine heatwave swept over the north east Pacific just as a mysterious underwater epidemic began causing sea stars to die off en masse.
Without a primary predator, an excess of purple sea urchins insatiably consumed their surrounding kelp forests. Over the past 100 years, these large ribbons of golden-brown seaweed had already dwindled in some stretches of the coast, due in large part to warming ocean conditions. By 2017, this sudden explosion of hungry sea urchins and an ongoing marine heat wave, strengthened by an El Niño weather pattern, wiped out more than 90 percent of kelp forests in some West Coast regions. It is very important that you indicate whether your gift is to go to the Operating Fund, Building Fund, or a particular temporary restricted fund. If you have forgotten to do this, please review your most recent quarterly statement of giving and/or your Breeze account to be sure that your donations have been assigned to the correct accounts. The counters who enter your donations into the Breeze system do not have access to the information regarding your pledge and cannot therefore guess what you meant to do.

Donating from IRA Accounts
Required minimum distributions (RMD) are the least amounts of money you must withdraw from your traditional IRA account each year, once you reach a certain age. If you make a qualified charitable contribution directly to St. Mark's for some or all of the RMD, that amount will not be taxed. Your financial advisor or IRA customer service can provide additional details on how to make this type of donation to St. Mark's.
