Annual Stewardship, Nov 3
Our annual stewardship drive is coming to a close and we ask that you please remember to turn in your pledge cards this Sunday, November 3, 2024 so that our congregation has an opportunity to pray for and thank our generous parishioners. Your pledge cards are important because they allow our Finance team to set a budget based on the estimated giving included on your pledge cards. Please prayerfully consider what gifts you can bring to the St. Mark's community and bring your pledge card this Sunday.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Amazing Trunk or Treat Team!
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who made St. Mark’s 5th Annual Trunk or Treat a memorable event. To our incredible volunteers, thank you for all the time and effort you dedicated to creating a joyful experience for the neighboring families of St. Mark’s. Your hard work truly brought smiles to our entire community!
A special thank you goes to our trunk participants. Your creative and imaginative displays transformed our parking lot into a magical Halloween wonderland that sparked excitement in kids and adults alike.
I’d also like to recognize those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes—the parking lot attendants, set-up and clean-up crew, those who manned the barbecue, the youth group who served food, those who manned the welcome table, and our event photographer. Your commitment and teamwork made this day possible, and I am truly grateful for each and every one of you.
Additionally, thank you to everyone who donated items and resources. Your generosity with money, candy, hot dogs, buns, condiments, chips, and water helped ensure our event had everything it needed. And, of course, to everyone who attended—thank you for bringing your energy and spirit to this beloved tradition.
Once again, my heartfelt thanks to all who gave their time, talent, and treasure. Your dedication and support are deeply appreciated and make our community a wonderful place.
With gratitude,
Betty Farrell

Shop for Christmas in Haiti!
On Sunday, November 10, the Haiti Partnership will have available (if the order arrives in time!) Singing Rooster Haitian chocolate bars (YUM!) The suggested minimum donation is $6 per bar, a savings for you unless you buy from Singing Rooster in bulk at wholesale prices. We will have Haitian-made beaded bracelets (suggested minimum donation $10) and some metal work, including the 21" -- 23" round metal works shown in the attached photos which sell online for $89 and up, not including shipping -- suggested minimum donation, $50. They come with a story -- you may have heard us mention For A Reason, a non-profit started by a former St. Mark's teacher, Denise Gideon, to provide for the education of Haitian schoolchildren through high school, trade school, college, and/or professional school. FAR purchases metalwork from an iron artisan so that he can keep his children in school, and they have passed along his recent metalwork to St. Mark's in support of St. Andre. For your online shopping convenience, we have a list for you of reliable on-line suppliers of Haitian goods which make great presents. Give Christmas or birthday gifts to your family and friends AND help Haitians earn a living! We will be at a table in the Parish Hall, and after we sell out, flyers will still be available in the Narthex. The goods we sell will help support our partnership with St. Andre in Trianon, providing education for the children of subsistence farmers in the countryside near Mirebalais. St. Andre teachers' salaries for one month total $1000 -- help us keep the school doors open in this time of trouble for Haiti. Checks may be made payable to St. Mark's with "Haiti" in the memo line. Thank you!

St. Mark's Book Club, Nov 16
Next meeting will be held at Maggie Vizio's on November 16th.
Next book is "Always a Song: Singers, Songwriters, Sinners & Saints" by Ellen Harper with Sam Barry.
Harper, whose parents founded the legendary Folk Music Center in Claremont, takes readers on a journey through a transformational time in music history and American culture from love-ins and civil rights protests onward.
One reviewer calls it a "beautifully written memoir that includes stories of Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez and others," while Jackson Browne declares it "a quiet, searching, account of a life lived for truth, love and music."
Please contact Maggie Vizio at: bookclub@stmarks-upland.org

“Even a wounded world is feeding us. Even a wounded world holds us, giving us moments of wonder and joy. I choose joy over despair. Not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the earth gives me daily and I must return the gift."

Giving Update through September 30, 2024
Thank you very much for your donations to St. Mark's -- and for supporting the recent program to purchase mugs and help the planet. We ask for your prayerful consideration of St. Mark's this fall. Our summer electricity and water bills spike in the summer, just when there is usually a summer giving lull. We also have a large structural deficit that we are striving to close. Operating fund contributions were about $200,000 through September 30 and we will need a robust fall to meet our budget. We have also received donations of about $40,000 for the building fund and $5,200 for Haiti outreach along with countless donations for outreach and small projects. Every donation is appreciated! We will be emailing quarterly donation statements and you can check your giving at any time through Breeze. Please contact Rose, our office administrator, at parishadmin@stmarks-upland.org if you wish to set up access through Breeze, wish to update your pledge, or have questions.

Donating from IRA Accounts
Required minimum distributions (RMD) are the least amounts of money you must withdraw from your traditional IRA account each year, once you reach a certain age. If you make a qualified charitable contribution directly to St. Mark's for some or all of the RMD, that amount will not be taxed. Your financial advisor or IRA customer service can provide additional details on how to make this type of donation to St. Mark's.

Thank you for your generous gift.
No matter how, how much, or how often you give,
you make a difference. Your contribution is appreciated.
