Lock/Drop, Cover, Hold On Procedure: In Case of an Earthquake
If you can, move/turn away from windows or objects that could fall/fly and injure you. If you can, lock the brakes on your mobility aid. If you can, get low to the ground. Cover your head and neck with your arms or with a protective object such as a pillow or a book, or clasp your hands around your neck. Close your eyes and mouth to protect against dust and debris. When the shaking stops, look around and above you to ensure it's safe before you start to move. Visually check your body for injuries; particularly any areas of reduced sensation, or that look or feel different than usual.

St. Mark's Book Club, Oct 19
St. Mark's Book Club will meet in our Parish Hall on October 19th, from 10am to 12 noon to discuss "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd.
This novel, set in 1964 South Carolina, follows motherless Lily Owens who flees a group of deeply racist men and her abusive father, with Rosaleen, her black "stand-in-mother" to Tiburon, the town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There, the two are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce them to their "mesmerizing world of bees and honey."
Reviewers have praised the book as "a wonderful novel about mothers and daughters and the transcendent power of love, all the while masterfully illuminating the feminine face of God" and as "wonderfully written, powerful, poignant, humorous, and deliciously eccentric."

Youth Group News
On October 20, we will go over how the youth group will help with Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 26, and begin creating our skit to help the congregation use our waste, recycling, and composting bins appropriately. If you can help with Trunk or Treat, you should try to arrive as close to 3:00 PM as possible and plan to stay until 8:00 PM. The youth group will help by handing out hot dogs, chips, and water to people coming to Trunk or Treat, and will also be available to take extra candy to decorated cars as needed, run errands between work groups, and help clean up afterwards. If your school requires community service hours, this counts!

Triune God, Creator of all,
We praise you for your goodness, visible in all the diversity that you have created, making us a cosmic family living in a common home. Through the Earth you created, we experience love and nourishment, home and protection.
We confess that we do not relate to the Earth as a Mothering gift from you, our Creator. Our selfishness, greed, neglect, and abuse have caused the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, human suffering as well as the suffering of all our fellow creatures. We confess that we have failed to listen to the groans of the Earth, the groans of all creatures, and the groans of the Spirit of hope and justice that lives within us. May your Creator Spirit help us in our weakness, so that we may know the redeeming power of Christ and the hope found in him. May the groans of the Spirit birth in us a willingness to serve you faithfully, so that we may hear and heal Creation, to hope and act together with her, so that the first fruits of hope may blossom. Loving and Creator God, we pray that you will make us sensitive to these groans and enable us to have the same compassion as that of Jesus, the redeeming Lord. Grant us a fresh vision of our relationship with Earth, and with one another, as creatures that are made in your image.
In the name of the one who came to proclaim the good news to all Creation, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Giving Update through September 30, 2024
Thank you very much for your donations to St. Mark's -- and for supporting the recent program to purchase mugs and help the planet. We ask for your prayerful consideration of St. Mark's this fall. Our summer electricity and water bills spike in the summer, just when there is usually a summer giving lull. We also have a large structural deficit that we are striving to close. Operating fund contributions were about $200,000 through September 30 and we will need a robust fall to meet our budget. We have also received donations of about $40,000 for the building fund and $5,200 for Haiti outreach along with countless donations for outreach and small projects. Every donation is appreciated! We will be emailing quarterly donation statements and you can check your giving at any time through Breeze. Please contact Rose, our office administrator, at parishadmin@stmarks-upland.org if you wish to set up access through Breeze, wish to update your pledge, or have questions.

Donating from IRA Accounts
Required minimum distributions (RMD) are the least amounts of money you must withdraw from your traditional IRA account each year, once you reach a certain age. If you make a qualified charitable contribution directly to St. Mark's for some or all of the RMD, that amount will not be taxed. Your financial advisor or IRA customer service can provide additional details on how to make this type of donation to St. Mark's.

Gift Card Fundraiser Update: 76 Gas, Landry's, and Land's End Cards
Thank you to everyone who has purchased gift cards. We are only $375 dollars away from exhausting our supply! The remaining gift cards are 76 Gas (4@$25), Land's End (3@25), Rainforest Cafe/Morton's (4@25) and TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Home Goods ($100). Please contact or see Marcia Godwin if you are interested. We have raised $1,200 much-needed funds to pay for our operating expenses. Please continue to prayerfully consider giving to St. Mark's this fall. We are striving to close our budget deficit and rebound from summer electric bills.

Thank you for your generous gift.
