The Feast of St Francis, October 6
We will be celebrating the Feast of St Francis with the blessing of the animals. Following the 10 o'clock service we will be having a vegetarian potluck, so please start thinking of something to bring and share. Please make sure it's vegetarian, nothing with a heartbeat. Also, for this potluck as a way of cutting the amount of trash we produce, we are asking that you bring your own plate, cup and flatware. Pretend it's the 1960's before all the paper and plastic became a thing. This is a small way that we can bless all animals and be better stewards of our planet. Thank you.

Checking In: Fr. White, Rector Emeritus
On Sunday, September 29, Canon Beeks reported that Rector Emeritus Father Konrad White checked in to say that they are ok, in a safe location, and that their home is secure.
God of the present moment, God who in Jesus stills the storm and soothes the frantic heart; bring hope and courage to all as we wait in uncertainty. Bring hope and peace with whatever lies ahead. Bring us courage to endure what cannot be avoided. For your will is health and wholeness; you are God, and we need you.

St. Mark's Book Club, Oct 19
St. Mark's Book Club will meet in our Parish Hall on October 19th, from 10am to 12 noon to discuss "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd.
This novel, set in 1964 South Carolina, follows motherless Lily Owens who flees a group of deeply racist men and her abusive father, with Rosaleen, her black "stand-in-mother" to Tiburon, the town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There, the two are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce them to their "mesmerizing world of bees and honey."
Reviewers have praised the book as "a wonderful novel about mothers and daughters and the transcendent power of love, all the while masterfully illuminating the feminine face of God" and as "wonderfully written, powerful, poignant, humorous, and deliciously eccentric."

Youth Group News
The youth group will meet this coming Sunday, October 6, and Sunday, October 20, from 11:30 – 12:30 PM. This Sunday is St. Francis Day and the congregation remembers that St. Francis was in harmony with all of God’s Creation in several ways. People may bring their pets to be blessed during the service. After the service, we will go to the patio with Mrs. Beardsley and help church members plant small pots of succulent plants taken from our St. Francis Garden. If you have extra small pots that you would be willing to give to this activity, they will be welcome. There will also be a vegetarian potluck brunch, and everyone is asked to bring their own washable plate, utensils, and cup to be used and then taken home to wash with our other dishes. This reminds us to reduce our waste and be respectful of our planet.
On October 20, we will go over how the youth group will help with Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 26, and begin creating our skit to help the congregation use our waste, recycling, and composting bins appropriately. If you can help with Trunk or Treat, you should try to arrive as close to 3:00 PM as possible and plan to stay until 8:00 PM. The youth group will help by handing out hot dogs, chips, and water to people coming to Trunk or Treat, and will also be available to take extra candy to decorated cars as needed, run errands between work groups, and help clean up afterwards. If your school requires community service hours, this counts!

Lock/Drop, Cover, Hold On Procedure: In Case of an Earthquake
If you can, move/turn away from windows or objects that could fall/fly and injure you. If you can, lock the brakes on your mobility aid. If you can, get low to the ground. Cover your head and neck with your arms or with a protective object such as a pillow or a book, or clasp your hands around your neck. Close your eyes and mouth to protect against dust and debris. When the shaking stops, look around and above you to ensure it's safe before you start to move. Visually check your body for injuries; particularly any areas of reduced sensation, or that look or feel different than usual.

A Message from the Red Cross
Blood products collected at your drive have now been delivered to patients in need of vital care! Distribution included, but was not limited to, the following local hospitals:
Providence, St. Joseph Medical Center, Huntington Memorial Hospital, UCI Medical Center, PIH Health, Good Samaritan Hospital, KP-Southbay
Each local drive is an integral piece of a puzzle to secure a healthy, readily available blood supply in your community and for every American in need. When collections exceed need for patients in local communities, we are able to expand distribution to areas with low supply due to weather, seasonal illness, and other challenges. Ensuring we don’t waste a single drop of blood is our way of honoring your selfless effort and that of every generous donor.
We’re so grateful for your partnership and hope you and your team feel the pride of extraordinary service to your community and beyond.

The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
This is a passage of scripture that, though metaphor in Revelation, is literal today. In a time of climate breakdown, trees are some of our best allies. Old growth trees, in particular, provide all sorts of ecosystem services, building physical resilience in the midst of fires, flooding, and extreme heat. These trees pull carbon out of the atmosphere and store it in their bodies, they safeguard biodiversity and serve as sites of climate refugia, they reduce flood and erosion risk in the face of extreme weather. And, older trees are more resistant to fire that is wreaking havoc on younger trees around the world.
Beyond all these important physical traits, we can learn from the spiritual wisdom revealed through old and mature growth trees. As created beings reflect the image of their Creator, there is much that we can learn about God’s purposes for creation by being attentive to these trees.

If you make a qualified charitable contribution directly to St. Mark's for some or all of the RMD, that amount will not be taxed. Your financial advisor or IRA customer service can provide additional details on how to make this type of donation to St. Mark's.
