Good News for Virginia Business: Legislation That Would Undermine Right To Work Defeated
On Sunday, February 9th, the Virginia Senate Commerce and Labor Committee held a special Sunday meeting of the committee to take up the final bills on it’s docket. One of the final bills that the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association had been following— SB426, Fair Share Fees —was defeated by a bipartisan vote of 12-3 . This legislation would have significantly undermined the existing Right to Work law by requiring that employees had to pay labor union dues as a condition of employment.

In addition, HB153 in the House of Delegates was referred to the House Appropriations Committee. Thankfully, the committee has yet to take it up. With the looming crossover deadline that bills pass the house of origin by the middle of this week, it appears the legislation is dead for the year.
