From Our Senior Warden

My spotlight this week is on the very first person any visitor to our parish will ever see - our ushers!

An usher’s responsibility is to be a greeter and a guide for worshippers new and old.  They distribute bulletins and prayer folders, help find seats for parishioners who have special needs and for visitors who may be anxious about entering a new space.

During the service, they assist with the collection of offerings. They also alert the priest to any eucharistic needs for parishioners who are unable to reach the altar rail.

Our ushers at Ascension Episcopal Parish work in pairs and are an integral part of our worship at the church.

It doesn’t matter if you have attended Ascension for decades or are only just beginning your journey with us  - if you are someone who is friendly, approachable, and observant, I would encourage you to sign up to be one of our ushers!

Join us for our Garden Party!

April 12, 2025 from 1-4 P.M.

Come join Janet Baker, our incredible Landscape Committee chair, as she prepares the outside flower beds for Easter! We are asking for parishioners to bring white begonias, impatiens, petunias, or another favorite annual to plant in the flower beds. After we finish planting, there will be time for food and fellowship in Reinhart Hall!

If you are unable to attend, but would still like to help? You can drop off an annual to be planted for you, or help with a food item for the reception.

From Our Seminarian

Dr. Emily Guimaraes

Greetings from your seminarian!

From January 9-19, I was in New York City for seminary. Our program is “hybrid,” which means that we gather multiple times a year for intensive in-person time, and then return home for quarter-long classes that are taught online. I am experiencing this as the best of many worlds. We cannot relocate the Guimaraes family, or me out of it, right now for residential seminary (though my lovely husband offered!). But there is something irreplaceable about being in an in-person seminary community, gathering three times a day for worship and music (Morning and Evening Prayer and noonday Eucharist), abundant conversation and friendship with those also on the path, and mentorship from faculty. It was wonderful to come together as a community. We were hosted by Trinity Wall Street, which has a special relationship with CDSP (and is paying for our education!).

I’ve been really impressed with how the online component is going. So far, I’ve completed courses in church history and in Old Testament. New Testament is just beginning. And believe it or not, I’m even able to work on Greek and Hebrew, thanks to the amazing Academy right here in our own diocese!

As I start my field placement, the first thing to say is that I miss and value Ascension. We have a unique and wonderful community, history, and worship practice. I feel blessed to come from such a loving and supportive church home. St. John’s, Milwaukie is many things that we are not: a little lower church, a little suburban, less dedicated to traditional Anglican music. All these are much-needed areas of growth for me. But like us, it is devoted to excellence both in liturgy and in Christian love. So I feel right at home. I will be preaching my first-ever sermon on Maundy Thursday; feet will be washed.

I will have a unique learning opportunity coming up soon: I will be traveling with a medical mission sponsored by the organization Faith in Practice from March 28-April 6.  I will be traveling with a group of surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists to provide general and gynecologic surgery in Guatemala. My role on the team will be not as an anesthesiologist but as the spiritual care provider to this religiously diverse group of practitioners. This is an outgrowth not only of my call to ministry but of my work as a peer supporter in anesthesiology. If you’re curious to learn more, visit www.faithinpractice.org.

Lenten Soup & Worship

Please join us for a Lenten dinner each Wednesday evening of the Lenten season. Together we will share soup, bread and a glass of wine or other beverage. Following the meal we will have a quiet Evening Prayer service. All are welcome to join us for any or all of these offerings. Dinners will begin at 5:30 P.M. with worship service from 6:00-6:30 P.M. If you would like to bring soup to share, a sign-up sheet is available in the Parlor.

Last week, Liz Gottfried shared this delicious Minestrone Soup from the Silver Palate New Basics Cookbook (p. 583)

4 ounces bacon, cut into ¼-inch dice

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

4 cloves garlic, finely minced

2 carrots, peeled and cut into ¼-inch dice

1 onion, peeled and cut into ¼-inch dice

1 leek (white part and 1 inch green), well rinsed, quartered lengthwise, and cut into ¼-inch-thick slices

3 cups finely shredded green cabbage

2 zucchini, quartered lengthwise and cut into ¼-inch-thick slices

1 Idaho potato, peeled and cut into ¼-inch dice

4 cups chicken stock or canned broth

2 cups homemade beef stock or canned broth

2 tablespoons tomato paste

5 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian (flat-leaf) parsley

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1½ teaspoons dried basil

1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

Salt, to taste

2 cups cooked red kidney beans

4 ripe plum tomatoes, cut into ¼-inch dice

½ cup small pasta, such as tiny bow shapes or ditali (short macaroni)

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for garnish

Cook the bacon in a large soup pot over low heat to render the fat, about 10 minutes. Do not let it brown. Add the butter, and when it has melted, add the garlic, carrots, onion, and leek and raise the heat slightly. Cover and wilt the vegetables for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the cabbage, zucchini, potato, both stocks, and tomato paste. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and add 2 tablespoons of the parsley, oregano, basil, pepper, and salt. Simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes.

Add the kidney beans, tomatoes, and pasta. Simmer until the pasta is tender, 10 minutes. Adjust the seasonings and heat through. Stir in the remaining 3 tablespoons parsley before serving. Pass the Parmesan cheese alongside.

An Invitation from Mother SuEllen

I would like to meet with all of you, individually or in small groups. Please know that these chats are important to me, and to the future of this church. We need to know where we are starting from so that we can go forward together.

I am at Ascension Parish on Tuesdays from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. I am also at the church Wednesdays through Fridays, when my schedule varies, so it is best to meet me by appointment. If you would like to schedule a specific time to meet with me, please give me a call at 971-200-0970. Remember, I do make house calls as well. I am here to be of service to you.

In-Kind Donations

The Collect for The Second Sunday in Lent: March 16, 2025

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
