JOIN ASCENSION PARISH’S PRAYER CHAIN

CONNECT WITH THE PARISH AND PARISHIONERS

During our season of Lent and Easter, we walked the path of Jesus and the disciples. We heard about their prayers for healing and of celebration, their cries of despair and betrayal. Through it all, they kept open a conduit to God. A meaningful conversation of all things human towards the divine.

Today, our need to communicate - with God as well as one another -  is just as strong as it was in the lessons from the New Testament. Here at Ascension Parish, we are looking for individuals who want to make a meaningful difference in our parish community. Whether it’s prayer during times of trial, or thanksgiving in times of celebration, there’s always a reason to communicate with God.

Members of our community reach out to the church in their times of need. We would like to share those prayer requests with our parishioners to be prayed for. Prayers at home, at church, in your garden, or on your daily commute - it only takes a few minutes of time to turn our thoughts to our brothers and sisters and the needs of our whole community.

If you are interested in joining the Ascension Parish Prayer Chain, please contact me at srwarden@ascensionepiscopalparish.org

Your name will be added to our list of volunteers and we will send information about the prayer requests that are sent to our community. We hope that you will add them into your personal prayer time with God.

Dear Parish Family,

There are two music events coming up in May at Ascension that I would like to share with you! They are very different, but both are going to be uplifting and beautiful - and both will feature out lovely Coulter tracker organ!

Our next Salon Series concert is on May 10 at 4:00 P.M. It will feature contralto Hannah Penn, the head of the voice department at Willamette University and one of the finest singers in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Penn will share a concert of music by the Baroque composer Barbara Strozzi, an innovative musician who wrote passionate, enthralling songs. I will accompany Dr. Penn on our tracker organ - and for part of the concert, we'll switch places, and I will sing while Dr. Penn accompanies me! Dr. Penn is a Strozzi expert, and you won't want to miss this opportunity to hear her!

Want to know what the music will sound like? Check out this video of Hannah Penn performing Strozzi with a lutenist!

Be sure to also mark your calendars for Choral Evensong for the Eve of the Ascension on May 28 at 5 P.M. Our Ascension Choir will sing beloved, traditional Anglican music for our patronal feast, in a service led by Mother SuEllen. You'll hear music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir John Stainer, and more!

Here's a recording of one of the pieces the choir will sing at Evensong!

Both of these events are great opportunities to invite your friends to our church. I hope you can join us!

Soli Deo gloria,

Dear Parish Family,

I recently returned from a week with my surgery, anesthesia, and nursing colleagues

providing care in Antigua, Guatemala. I was asked to join the team as the spiritual

care provider, which was a wonderful change for me. My medical colleagues resemble

closely the demographics of the city of Portland, and come from many faith

backgrounds, few are active in a worshiping congregation in any tradition. At the same

time, they are people of faith: faith that their work can make a difference, faith in the

power of community, faith that acts of generosity and kindness stretch and change us.

My primary role was to help us build our own community of mutual and outreaching

care, and to support everyone in the challenges of the work: the difficulty of providing

care in an unfamiliar environment and the “adventure” and occasional adversity of

travel. I also offered to pray with patients before and after surgery. Guatemala is,

demographically, about 40% Roman Catholic and 40% evangelical, and I heard many

testimonies of profound Christian faith: this shared Christian prayer was the highlight of

the trip. This experience helped me to appreciate the need for, and rewards of, health

care chaplaincy.

Hard to believe, but my first year in seminary at CDSP is already drawing to a close.

This year’s coursework has focused on the Bible. Seminary is in a “hybrid” format,

which means some travel for weeklong in-person sessions, but mostly structured

asynchronous online learning, with a LOT of reading and writing. It’s been both

rigorous and satisfying; the curriculum is well thought out and means that I do get to

spend significant time with my classmates, but can also continue working and can

remain at home here with my family in Portland. The seminary is in the process of

selling its Berkeley campus, which means that our in-person gatherings are beginning to

be hosted around the country. Our next gathering is in Portland in September!

I am not at home with you at Ascension as I am currently assigned in seminarian field

placement, in order to learn about ministry throughout the church. I am now serving at

the parish of St. John the Evangelist, Milwaukie, where I preached for the first time on

Maundy Thursday (and will do so again at Ascension). St. John’s has welcomed me

with open arms. It’s a great opportunity to learn in a place that’s a little bigger, a little

lower-church, and very centered in local community outreach. I miss our worship and

music very much, as well as all of you -- but have been delighted with the vibrant life of this parish and the kind welcome they’ve offered me as a learner.

Strozzi was among the most prolific and successful Venetian composers of her time, and a brilliant writer for women’s voices - as well as a fearless and determined human being. The Christening of Lila Valentina Capone Jones

Thank you to precious Lila for bringing joy to Ascension Parish and thank you to the entire Capone Jones family for sharing her baptism and celebration with us!

Easter Sunday

Thank you to our Altar Guild led by Karen Albaugh for the beautiful window basket arrangements and Easter Lilies in the Sanctuary, and flowers throughout the church.

And to Laura Krum for designing the Easter Brunch in Reinhart Hall. Your talents are a much appreciated ministry at Ascension!

An Invitation from Mother SuEllen

I would like to meet with all of you, individually or in small groups. Please know that these chats are important to me, and to the future of this church. We need to know where we are starting from so that we can go forward together.

I am at Ascension Parish on Tuesdays from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. I am also at the church Wednesdays through Fridays, when my schedule varies, so it is best to meet me by appointment. If you would like to schedule a specific time to meet with me, please give me a call at 971-200-0970. Remember, I do make house calls as well. I am here to be of service to you.

The Collect for the Third Sunday in Easter: May 4, 2025

O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
