Eight teacher candidates participated in a three-day event facilitated by GSN, CSU-Pueblo, and Battelle for Kids in partnership with the La Veta RE-2 School District and the SC BOCES. The second of three immersion experiences, which are a potential answer to the state-wide teacher shortage, kicked off on September 14th. Teacher candidates spent time touring La Veta, meeting with the superintendent, local real estate agents, and school board members to learn more about the area. They also participated in homecoming week activities with the community and even helped build floats for the parade! GSN's Kathryn Allison supported the immersion experience to provide professional development in Team Building (part of GSN Social Emotional Learning curriculum).  Thanks to the Colorado Department of Higher Education for providing grant funds for this experience!

An additional immersion event will take place October 26-28 in Manzanola, Colorado. It will be tied to the second Colorado Rural Share Fair event in Pueblo where potential teachers will interview with superintendents and principals from rural school districts. Teaching candidates interested in the job fair on October 28, can register here.

GSN appreciates the opportunity to continue to be a voice in national education innovation and policy work through the Next Generation Learning Challenges and TeachStrong Initiatives.  This month, GSN was able to contribute to TeachStrong's policy platform release and to NGLC's resource development around teacher hiring practices. Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science (UA AMS) has been in the news recently for some of their amazing work around Umoja and Nia: leadership programs centered on bolstering students sense of self through cohort-focused, social emotional interventions. These two enrichment programs--geared toward young men and women, respectively--were designed to empower at-risk young people with the voice, tools, and leadership skills needed to be not only academically successful in high school, but also college and career ready. WNYC, New York's flagship public radio station that broadcasts NPR programming, highlighted this South Bronx school's innovative approach to supporting at-risk youth. Follow the link to hear the four-minute radio spot. Congratulations on your good work!

The New York Community Trust Leadership Fellows is a partnership of the New York Community Trust and the Baruch College School of Public and International Affairs, its Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management, and Office of Executive Certificate Programs.
Its aim is to ensure that tomorrow's nonprofit organizations have the human capital to flourish and advance their missions on behalf of New Yorkers. Through this fellowship, Christon will participate in a rigorous curriculum designed to improve leadership skills, analytical aptitude, and strategic planning and implementation. Moreover, he will use the support and mentorship to help GSN develop better evaluation tools to measure impact.

At Generation Schools Network, we could do very little of our great work without our professional volunteers! It is our privilege to highlight some of their amazing talents and critical work with Generation Schools.

Sylvia A. Michalski came to partner with us through Taproot (professional volunteer portal) in February of this year on our outcome analysis project, highlighting data research and comparisons of our work with West Generation Academy. Between February and June, 2016, Sylvia was able to validate and complete a competitor's outcome analysis project along with structuring a grant measurement reporting approach for our programs and services to determine accuracy in bidding and project results totaling approximately 30 hours.  With an MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Sylvia's background includes expertise in topics such as: strategic planning, marketing analysis and research, business development, and program management. Thank you Sylvia for your service!
