GSN Supports Back to School Celebration at Trinidad Middle School!

Trinidad Middle School (TMS) recently celebrated students, staff, and the start of a brand-new year! The Trinidad high school band and cheerleaders were there, bringing music and pom routines to show their support of their Middle School friends. Parents and community members stood and clapped along with the drums and brass as the band enthusiastically played the Trinidad School song. To open the event, Dr. Lisa Leith, from Generation Schools Network, delivered a keynote on The Power of Kindness, highlighting evidence of the impact the TMS Kindness Initiative has already had on the community, and casting a vision for an even more powerful impact in the years to come. As students, parents, staff, and community members welcomed each other and came together for this event, it was clear that in Trinidad School District it is definitely "Cool to be Kind"!

GSN's Micki Nelson recently volunteered at Florence Crittenton's (FC) Career Day in support of GSN partner, KidsTek. The goal of the event was consistent with FC's mission, "to support and empower teen mothers to become productive citizens." Each volunteer professional worked with several students to review/improve their resumes and give them job search, cover letter, and interview tips. The volunteers also participated in a career panel discussion that included topics like their professional role and journey, what inspired them to pursue their careers, and what advice they  would give to high school students. Student participants were from North High School and Florence Crittenton High School.

Is your staff wondering how suspension and expulsion impact student achievement gaps?

The gaps in academic achievement between white and minority children have long concerned educators and policymakers. There have been a multitude of efforts to reform public education in order to boost students test scores with the goal of helping youth of all races and backgrounds to be prepared for post-secondary success without the need for college course remediation. While students have made progress, significant disparities persist. Recent data shows that while 85% of white students are finishing high school on time and with a regular diploma, that is true for only 68% of black students and 76% of Latino students (National Center for Education Statistics). For more on strategies to combat disparities and to better understand the impacts of suspension and expulsion, please visit: Student Success Journey.
