GSN Assists in building a new playground in Kit Carson!

Kit Carson School District recently secured a Kaboom! Grant to build a new playground for their district. The playground was built on August 9th and was the communal effort of the staff and students from the district, the Colorado Health Foundation and folks at Kaboom! and the support of GSN's Jessica Green, Meredith Foulke and Maggie Mather. The playground will be used by students and community members for years to come and will be a symbol of the district's commitment to health and wellness.

GSN Facilitates Summer Math Institute with UCCS!

Generation Schools Network was honored to co-facilitate the Summer Math Institute in partnership with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and South Central BOCES through funding from the Plan Into Action Grant. The UCCS Summer Institute provided opportunities to improve effectiveness of math instruction (math tasks, facilitating math discussions), build mentor and novice teacher relationships, and introduce pre-service teachers to rural teachers. SC BOCES teachers engaged in high-impact instructional practices (K-12) including mathematical frameworks and mindsets, learning theories, 3-Act math, active thinking, STEM Engineering Design, math tasks and 5 Practices (math discussion). Teachers agreed that the Summer Math Institute was relevant to professional needs, interactive, a good way to network and fun! "I know it's my job to be the teacher, but that does not always mean I have to be the one teaching everything. I learned to allow for my students to spark the conversation, to have them problem solve and discuss and explore for the correct answer(s) instead of me just giving them to them." Novice teacher, La Veta School District.
