From the Lead Presbyter
Gratitude begets gratitude. When we give thanks, our hearts crack open and we notice how much there is to be thankful for. Lots of folks practice this as a spiritual discipline, each day writing down a few things for which they are thankful. It’s effective. Exercising the “thanks” muscle every day strengthens it.
Gratitude is a constant refrain in the scriptures, and it is most often expressed by people who have experienced trials, who know despair, who grieve. I think that’s why Psalm 23 is beloved by so many and resonates with anyone who has known loss and sorrow. The psalmist voices thanks for the gift of simply being alive after coming so close to death, and of knowing God has been there all along and provided life-giving sustenance.
We have two expressions of gratitude in our house on Thanksgiving. Before our meal, everyone is invited to say what they are grateful for. Even those who don’t love the practice have clearly thought about their responses. We also set an empty space at the table in remembrance of family who are no longer here. It is bittersweet but never fails to make me thankful for having loved people enough to miss them so.
If you cannot summon gratitude right now, because the struggle is real and the pain is too much and the worry about the future is heavy, that’s okay. Sit with whatever it is you feel, but leave space, because you will give thanks again. Giving thanks is in our nature. God made us to be grateful and to express that as part of our relationship with the divine and with the world around us.
The poet Mary Oliver elevates thanksgiving to an art form with her full heart for the most ordinary things. In “Messenger” she writes: “My work is loving the world. / Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird— / equal seekers of sweetness. / Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums. / Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. / Are my boots old? Is my coat torn? / Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me / keep my mind on what matters, / which is my work, / which is mostly standing still and learning to be / astonished. / The phoebe, the delphinium. / The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture. / Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here, / which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart / and these body-clothes, a mouth with which to give shouts of joy / to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam, / telling them all, over and over, how it is / that we live forever.
Friends, let us be thankful. In gratitude for God’s love for us, may we radically love God’s people and God’s world.
Blessings,
Ann
PS: One thing I am not grateful for is hackers who sow confusion, attempt to deceive, and add to our workload. Many of you have received an email this week purportedly from me (from pastor.presbyterian.chruch57@gmail.com>). I will NEVER send you vague messages about “a request for you to discreetly manage” and asking for “no calls so kindly respond back via email.” Do NOT respond; delete. It’s a scam.

Clerk’s Corner
We are headed into the busy season for Clerks of Session. As you may have seen in my email to many of you who are clerks, there have been some changes that have taken place at the Office of the General Assembly. In years past, Kris Valerius was the individual responsible for all of the annual statistical reporting through the portal system. However, sadly and unfortunately, she suffered a brain event early this year and went on temporary disability. She was not able to come back to work. During that time, others at OGA have been working to fulfill her work.
In the last couple of weeks, OGA has announced that they have decided not to hire a replacement but instead to eliminate that position and allow the work to be absorbed by others. Therefore, the timing of annual statistical reporting will be a little different this year. Initially, we thought that Session Clerks would be allowed to access their stats online halfway through December. We have now received an update to state that you will not be able to do so until January.
What does this mean for you? Well, in the long run, not too much as you weren’t able to enter your reports until after Session approved them after the end of the year. However, you won’t be able to start your process earlier. What can you do in the meantime? I will still be sending you all of the information you receive at the end of the year, and you will be able to start working on it. If you need past reports, I can help with that as well. For those who attended the Clerk’s Convo last week, we talked about not waiting until the last minute because some of the reports require information gathered from others. As always, if you need anything, please let me know.
Did You Know? Polity Edition
Co-Clerks: Can you have co-clerks? Absolutely, you can have co-clerks, just make sure you elect both and you know what the expectations are for each. It might be that one clerk will be the parliamentarian and the other will be the recorder of minutes. Maybe both clerks will record minutes and then you will compare minutes. If this is the case, only one set of minutes will be voted on by the Session to approve and be placed into the permanent book. If you have co-clerks, the one who writes the minutes should be the one to sign the minutes. If both clerks are responsible for taking the minutes, both clerks should sign.
The next Clerk’s Convo will be December 10th at 10 am. At this time, I should be able to start accessing the portal system for the annual statistical reports, and we will talk about all of the end-of-year reporting.

The Mission of the Church | |
From Your Finance Team
It’s a season of giving thanks. Your finance team would like to express our thanks to all of you for your faithfulness.
Your congregation’s continued support makes the work of our Presbytery possible—providing for our staff, preparing people to become Ministers of Word and Sacrament, and funding the work of our committees and the larger church, the costs of assemblies and other gatherings, and the ministries that connect us. Giving also enables us to provide grant money so churches can to do ministry beyond their walls.
We have received and forwarded to the Presbyterian Mission Agency (GA) and Synod more than $34,000 in general mission giving.
Special offerings received through October surpass $52,800 for One Great Hour of Sharing, Christmas Joy, Peacemaking, and Pentecost. We’ve also collected almost $6,700 in disaster relief funds. All of these are pass-through funds that we process and send for the General Assembly and the Synod to disperse.
Presbytery of Great Rivers has received over $69,000 in mission funds from our churches that will be used to further our part of mission work for years to come. Our Visioning committee has issued $7,000 in grants so far in 2024 to help our churches
engage with their community and provide programs and outreach opportunities.
As mentioned at the assembly meeting on Saturday, November 9, Visioning is still accepting applications for grants to be paid out in 2024. The deadline for applications is Sunday, December 1, 2024. Visioning will meet on December 4 to approve applications submitted. Please consider applying to get additional support for your ministry. http://www.greatriverspby.org/uploads/2/4/5/6/24561669/visioning_grant_application-1.pdf
Once again thanks to all who have given.
Bill Strawbridge – Treasurer and Sabrina McGrath - Bookkeeper

Ministry with the Least of These
In 2022, the General Assembly declared the PC(USA) to be a “Sanctuary and Accompaniment Church.” Walking alongside newcomers, building community with immigrants, belonging together to communities of worship, we understand the importance of standing with, uplifting, and holding up those who are made vulnerable by political action and injustice. As Christ’s church, we are called to be in prayer for and reach out to those in our communities to ask how we may show up, accompany, and support them.
Two resources may be helpful to your congregations: the family care plan and discerning to offer sanctuary. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights partners with over 60 nonprofit organizations that provide services throughout Illinois. Support the Christmas Joy Offering
During the season of Advent, we remember and reflect God’s perfect gift, Jesus Christ. This child, the Word made flesh, became one of us, so, through the Christmas Joy Offering, we honor this amazing gift by supporting leaders among us — past, present and future. The Christmas Joy Offering supports retired ministers and church workers and their families through the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions and students in Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping Communities of Color as they pursue education and prepare to use their gifts in service to the church and world. Resources for interpretation of the Offering can be found here, and a promotional video can be found here.

Resilience Is a Practice
LeaderWise recognizes that as leaders and as helping professionals you are holding a lot right now! On the heels of two significant hurricanes this fall, a contentious election season, and any personal struggles you may be carrying, this time continues to be marked by intense emotion, uncertainty, tension, and heightened anxiety. We know that your parishioners, students, clients, and others are likely turning to you as they seek support, wisdom, and guidance. Now is a good time to pause and collectively remember that resilience is a practice. During the summer of 2023, LeaderWise shared a series that included eleven tangible steps that helping professionals can take to support their own resilience. We wanted to remind you of these tools and resources so that you can continue to serve those who need you.
