FROM PASTOR DANIEL
Last week I shared with you the WPC mission statement, adopted by the Session.
We are called to be and to make disciples
who love God and who love our neighbors.
It can be broken into three parts, and today and the next two weeks, I want to take a closer look.
First, we are called to be and to make disciples… The starting place is that we are called. Ephesians says the Lord called us to be in him before the foundation of the world. It means our identity as created people and as redeemed Christians is founded upon the initiative of God. We are not who we are because of something we have done; we are who we are because of the grace of God. God has called us.
In that calling, we have a purpose. As Jesus walked along the seashore and called people to follow him, God’s calling in our lives is for a particular purpose. Discipleship is synonymous with being an apprentice. As we spend time with Jesus, he shapes our lives, directs our steps, and gives us meaning and purpose. Discipleship grows in love for God and for neighbor. We are called to be disciples, both for our benefit, our neighbors’ benefit, and for the glory of God.
In addition to being called to learn life from Jesus, we are called to share that life with others. “Go make disciples…” is what Jesus told us before he ascended. At Westminster we share the path of discipleship with young and old, those near and those far away. It is not enough to keep the light to ourselves- the way of Jesus overflows from our lives into the world around us.
At the core, we are called to be and to make disciples.
With gracious love,
Pastor Daniel
