A Message from the Rector
An Invitation to Pray Together This Sunday
Dearly beloved,
Each of us knows how it can feel to try and pray when the unthinkable happens. Sometimes there is a flood of words and feeling. Sometimes we are frozen and no words come - only "sighs too deep for words" (Romans 8:26).
In the light of last weekend's confounding events - the loss of lives as well as the attempted assassination of our former President - I have found myself simply repeating, either sitting with a knotted rosary rope, or as I'm driving the car, making the dinner, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us and on the world."
Each of us finds God in prayer in God's own choosing and time. This Sunday, I want you to know that you're welcome to join me in the nave at 10:00 AM before the 10:15 service if you would like to gather with some people who love you and love God to pray for all that is unimaginable and yet also real. We shall likely have some silence and pray some of the historic prayers of the Book of Common Prayer, and I believe the Holy Spirit will meet us there.
With continued love in Christ and praying the Spirit finding and holding you today exactly where and as you are,
Imogen+

Don't Forget the Backpacks!
Again this summer we are collecting backpacks stuffed with school supplies for children served by Episcopal Farmworker Ministry! The goal this year is...75 backpacks!
You'll remember we smashed last year's goal of 50...so let's pull out the stops and shatter 75!
Please deliver your backpacks to the Parish Life Center through Sunday, August 4. The backpacks will be blessed during the 10:15 worship service on the 4th and then Fr. Fred from EFM will pick up the backpacks on August 5th.
What do the kids need?
Hardcopies of the needs lists above are also available at the Volunteer Desk in the Parish Life Center lobby.
And please remember--be sure to tag your backpacks with the appropriate grade they're intended for.
Thank you!

Share the Garden Wealth!
Remember to bring fresh produce with you to church on Sundays during the summer to donate for Interfaith Food Shuttle. You will find a donation bin in the Parish Life Center lobby. Produce donated on a Sunday will be blessed and distributed on the following Monday.
We also have a need for volunteers to deliver the collected produce to Interfaith Food Shuttle on Mondays. Please contact Jennifer Tlusty (919.414.2950) if you are able to deliver produce or if you have any questions. Thank you in advance!

A Culture of Care, A Culture of Love
Occasionally, life throws us curve balls, no doubt about it! Whether it's COVID, a pulled back, a sprained ankle, or a stomach bug, there are occasions when we could use a little help--maybe a friendly ear, a prayer, or a gallon of milk--none of us should feel timid to ask for some assistance from our parish family. After all, that's what families are for!
If you ever find yourself in need, please don't hesitate to contact the Parish Office (919.831.2000), Monday-Thursday, 9-5. Of course, for pastoral emergencies, please call the Pastoral Care Support Line 919.831.2008 anytime. This phone number is monitored by the clergy.

Coming July 28th
Tea & Biscuits with the Rector
Join me after the 10:15 service on July 28th for tea, biscuits, and a chance to connect over Joan Chittister's Radical Spirit: 12 Ways to Live a Free and Authentic Life. Section by section, Sister Joan takes the chapter on humility in the Rule of Benedict and reflects on its impact over the course of her life. She then goes on to offer clear-eyed consideration of how it can shape our lives here and now. Besides Henri Nouwen's Life of the Beloved, it is the book I have most recommended, lent, and given away since I was ordained. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and sharing this book (and some biscuits) with you.

Call to Action!
ONE Wake Petition for Affordable Housing
Contributed by Jeff Whittaker
Last Sunday (7 July) at the Beyond Our Doors Monthly Lunch, seventy folks signed this Petition.
So why sign?
According to the Wake County government more than 52,000 working households are unable to afford housing in Wake County. (Ref available upon request.) Raleigh and Cary are admirably addressing this problem by building or preserving over 3,500 affordable homes from 2019. But more must be done. Keep reading...

UPDATE!
Parish Finances
PLEASE CLICK HERE for a budget update (through June 30th). Thank you for your faithful financial support of our church and our ministries.
Avoiding the Dreaded Summer Slump
Churches often experience a 20% drop in giving during the summer, making it challenging to maintain a healthy budget. Vacations/staycations/a break from the business of life is highly encouraged and good for the soul. Kindly consider the option of recurring and/or online giving to ease the giving gap. Power bills, outreach support, and salaries continue to be paid, and regular cash flow keeps operating The Church of the Good Shepherd steady during the summer months. If you need help setting up a payment plan please contact our Parish Administrator, David Baggett (919.831.2018), for this easy option. Enjoy your time away and thank you for ensuring the important work of our parish continues.

EYC Open House
On the evenings of Friday, July 26, we will hold our EYC Open House. Our new and improved youth room will be open from 7-10 PM, and all EYC members and their friends are warmly invited to come play video games and watch movies on the big screen; play cards, foosball, and ping pong; or just hang out and listen to music. The room is yours.
The EYC Open House will not only provide our teens an opportunity to spend quality time
together, they’ll also give parents a free evening downtown.
While outside friends are always welcome to join us for EYC events, we are specifically
encouraging our young people to invite their school and neighborhood friends to attend these
Open House events. They present the perfect opportunity to introduce someone new to our
space and our program.
