Fill the bins for Food Not Bombs- through Sunday, July 6

It’s that time again! Cleaning out your closets? Food Not Bombs is a long-running mutual aid group seeking men's and women’s summer clothes, men’s shoes, summer hats, socks, new underwear, sleeping bags, and tents for distribution every Saturday in Moore Square. Items should be clean and in decent condition.

Please place your donations in the labeled bin in the PLC lobby. Contact Bethany Pergerson with any questions! Let’s fill the bins again by July 6!

Icons of Divine Mystery: Disability, the Imago Dei, and the Church’s Call to Slow Love

What does it mean to love our neighbor as ourselves when that neighbor’s body or mind challenges our assumptions about what is “normal” or “complete”? July is Disability Pride Month and it invites us to consider this question. In response, I’d invite us to see disability not as a problem to be solved, but as a theological gift that helps the Church glimpse the mystery of God.

We Are Hiring!

The Church of the Good Shepherd seeks a Director of Children and Family Ministries to sustain and expand our family ministry programs. They will create a welcoming and nurturing environment and provide opportunities for children and families to grow in their love and knowledge of God, their call to serve others, and their unique significance in the life of the parish and the world.

Support for the Unhoused: Join us July 12

Exciting news: On Thursday 3 July, eight members of the Church of the Good Shepherd joined other ONE Wake organizations for the blessing of the land that is being provided by the city for affordable housing. Getting land is a significant step towards providing homes. Good Shepherd’s strong participation is a show of support towards the Homeownership for Equity Campaign.

Next Step: On Saturday 12 July, ONE Wake is holding a non-partisan Accountability Action assembly with a target of 1000 ONE Wake participants. Local and state elected officials who last October committed to expanding affordable are invited. Specifically, ONE Wake will hear directly from our leaders:

  • Have they doubled city funding for affordable housing?
  • Have they identified enough public land for development?
  • Have they followed through on their promises?

The Accountability Action is Saturday 12 July Noon-2 pm at Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church 3703 Tryon Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606 which was filled to overflowing last October.

Good Shepherd needs to continue our energy for advocating for the less fortunate by our turn out. Your presence will show our support for helping the unhoused. - Jeff Whitaker, 919-696-1612 (Textable)

Bible Amnesty – August 3 & 10

This summer, Good Shepherd’s Newcomers Committee is offering a new series called Bible Amnesty. We have invited a select panel of our resident Bible scholars to answer all the questions about Holy Scripture that you’ve always been too afraid to ask. Bible Amnesty will be held in the Ennis Suite at 11:30 AM on August 3 and 10. This event is designed for newcomers but all are welcome to attend.

If you would like to submit a question in advance, place a card in the question box located in the hallway leading into the sanctuary. These cards can be signed or submitted anonymously. You can also email questions to Rev. Justin. Stupid questions are not only permitted, they’re encouraged!
