Newcomers Class and Reception
The Church of the Good Shepherd will host a series of Newcomers Classes immediately following the 10:15 Sunday service on March 9, 16, and 23. While our last series focused on the Anglican tradition, this next series will provide an introduction to our local parish: it’s history, its facilities, and its ministries. The series will kick off on March 9 with Duke Fentress’ popular tour of the stained-glass windows. Participants will not only learn about the windows and the iconography they display, but also something of the history of the church and those who built it. A Newcomers Reception will follow in early April. Contact: Rev. Justin

The Great Fast of Lent is a 40-day period of Christian reflection and preparation for Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Maundy Thursday, during which Christians traditionally practice fasting, prayer, and almsgiving to commemorate the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before starting his ministry. This solemn spiritual observance is a time for Christians to deepen their faith through self-discipline and focus on spiritual renewal. Common Lenten practices include giving up personal indulgences, increased prayer, acts of charity, and studying scripture.
The Book of Common Prayer tells us that, “The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful wee reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.”
Now, let us kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer.
-The Rev. Justin Gabbard
