Starting or operating a small to medium sized business can be an exciting experience, but unfortunately for some entrepreneurs, ventures could end badly. Consider, for instance, that 80 percent of new startups collapse within the first three years and half of the remaining never make it to five years. In fact, only 1% of businesses survive to 10 years, and many of the few that make it this far underperform.

However, there is some good news.
If you want to be one of the elite 1 percent of success stories and maximize your profitability, signage can help.

Why Do Businesses Fail?
Although there are several reasons why startups fail, there are really just two key factors.
  1. Lack of business to keep companies afloat in their early stages.
  2. Overspending on inefficient modes of advertising in an attempt to increase exposure.
When you registered your business, you were likely flooded with calls offering you the opportunity to advertise on radio and TV,  in newspapers and magazines, and through direct mail. All of these options have their share of both advantages and disadvantages.

Radio and cable TV. Although these methods may be useful for businesses that can afford to run ads frequently, for most startups, this is out of reach. Paying for an occasional ad is no solution: this provides you with only a short shelf life with very little impact.

Newspapers are similarly problematic. You may pay something like $700 for an ad on just one day, printed way back on page 16. The next day, your ad will be lining the bottom of consumers' bird cages.

Magazines. Claim to have a longer shelf life than either of the above. In reality very few people reread issues.

Direct Mail. It is easy to appreciate how this method is often a waste of money when you consider that a 2 percent response rate is supposedly excellent. This means that almost all your mail, which you worked hard to design and spent money to send out, ends up unopened in the trash can.

What does all the above advertising have in common?

They require continuous repetition for any chance of a return on investment and involve overtly targeting customers situated miles away from your business

When you look at it that way, the solution becomes obvious.
With your one time signage purchase that can last for 10 years or more, you can attract thousands of customers who are already on your doorstep.

The Effectiveness of Signage
Arbitron conducted a study to measure the effectiveness of signage as compared to the cost of other methods of advertising.
