Ministerial Search Committee News

Last Sunday, Jeri Kroll shared an update from the Ministerial Search Committee. If you were unable to attend the service, we are recapping it here. The good news is that our group worked carefully, with interest and energy, to find a minister who would be a good match for Northshore Church. There was a lot to do, and we collaborated well together. The unfortunate news is that we were not successful during this first round.

We had three potential candidates, but after checking references, and holding ZOOM interviews, one candidate chose not to continue. The two remaining candidates participated in individual “pre-candidating” weekends with long interviews, tours of Northshore Church and the area, a Sunday Service, and conversations during casual meals. After thoughtful Ministerial Search Committee discussions, one candidate did not seem to be right for us, and the other candidate, for whom we were quite interested, decided to contract with another church.

However, after this disappointing news, we are pleased to let you know that we’re ready for the second round of Unitarian Unniversalist Association’s annual search process. In mid-April, we look forward to receiving the name(s) of new, potential candidates. These candidates are likely to be ministers who recently decided to look for a new church. We know the process and are ready to continue.

We appreciate the trust and support you have shared with us during this process. And, we look forward to continuing Northshore Church’s search for the minister who will join us after Carol’s retirement.

Thank you,

Jeri Kroll, Bo Batty, Beth Blanchard, Terri Hanson

Day of Silence

On April 14 students and their allies around the country – and the world – observe a Day of Silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ+ people in schools. The Day of Silence was first organized in 1996 by student leaders at the University of Virginia. They believed that their vow of silence could help people notice and become aware of bullying and harassment against the LGBTQ+ community.

Students receive permission from their schools to organize and participate on campus. The Day of Silence demonstrates support of LGBTQ+ individuals, highlighting their issues and promoting their rights in different ways, such as: colorful posters, not speaking throughout the day, and wearing tape across their mouths. At the end of the day, a silent rally, speaking event, or staged theatrics are organized to illustrate how name-calling, bullying, and intimidation can silence victims, often killing their self-confidence.

Today over ten thousand people from all 50 states participate in the Day of Silence. This day is gaining momentum year after year as people are increasingly becoming aware of the issues faced by LGBTQ+ youth. Day of Silence faces tremendous opposition from schools, parents, and socially conservative organizations as it is considered disruptive and supporting homosexuality.
