Parenting Moments
presented by Healthier Urban Families at Wayne State University
December 2022
We are ending our third year of Parenting Moments during a month that is celebratory and focused on peace and good will. Please see the list of activities to enjoy with your family during the holiday season. Also remember that a gift of time or money to a charity or cause of your choice can be a wonderful gift to your community.
The month of December represents the diversity that exists in this country with families observing Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. Unfortunately, hate- motivated events since last month’s newsletter have demonstrated that being perceived as different can be unsafe. In the aftermath of acts of violence and hate, we often wonder about the origins of the perpetrator’s beliefs. Please see this Months guide on Teaching Tolerance. Parents and caregivers plant the seeds of their children’s values and belief systems. Yes, the media and friends play a role, but we are our child’s teacher and model. Let’s enter this season thoroughly enjoying our customs and traditions and being intentionally curious and respectful of other’s. Let’s embrace our part in creating a safe and secure environment for all children. Happy holidays and see you next year! - Beverly Weathington
