Excessive Heat Continues as Students Go Back to School

Broward Resilience Unit is urging residents to be aware and mindful of the extreme heat that we are experiencing. Extreme heat refers to high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 2-3 days. As students are heading back to school it is important that they understand the risk of heat illness too. A few precautions students can take while they are outside:

  • Drink a cup of water every 20 minutes.
  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothes.
  • Rest in the shade for ten minutes.

Sunrise Utilities, part of the Broward Water Partnership, now provides a $125 rebate (up from previous $100). This increase acknowledges the rising costs of toilets due to inflation and aims to assist customers in affording the upgrade. To celebrate program updates, the Broward Water Partnership is promoting a Summer of Savings. Now through September 20, 2023, eligible applicants will be entered into a drawing to win a Gift Card valued at $250. It's an opportunity to save water, upgrade your toilet, and potentially win a prize to support other home improvement needs.

Start the School Year with New, Good and Green Habits

Statistics show that going green improves your school community.

As a parent, teacher, student or school administrator, there are easy ways to reduce the school's and your own personal environmental footprints. Start the year out strong, with sustainability in mind.

Parents and students: Put Your Best Foot Forward

  • Check your inventory of school supplies before buying new items. When you purchase supplies, look for eco-friendly options made from recycled content.
  • Stop idling. If the drop-off or pickup lines are at a standstill (or if you are parked, waiting for the final bell), turn off the ignition—idling emits toxins from the tailpipe that contribute to air pollution but also can be harmful, especially to those with asthma.
  • Reduce lunch waste. Pack reusable utensils, try paper sandwich bags or silicon reusable bags, and pack a lunch that contains only the food that the student intends to eat.

Thank you to all the families who attended this year's Back to School Round Up and visited the Sunrise Utilities/Good and Green table. Students had the opportunity to pickup a Sunrise Pass Up Plastics reusable water bottle or utensil kit, and decorate reusable canvas pencil pouches. Check out some of the creative artwork below!
