Creating Habitat Connectivity

The City of Sunrise is one of the participating cities working with the Broward Habitat Connectivity Project since 2018. The City is not featured in the video but if you look closely you will see photos from Sunrise activities. The Connectivity Project helped initiate and offer four Gardening For Wildlife Workshops with plant giveaways, installed a butterfly garden with Franklin Academy STEM students at the Sunrise Gas Division, and installed trees and expanded the butterfly garden at Welleby Elementary!

Sunrise Participates at Climate Leadership Summit

The 14th Annual Southeast Florida Climate Leadership Summit to "CONNECT. COMMIT. ACT." was hosted by Broward County at the Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale in December. Climate change presents unique challenges and opportunities for Sunrise, Broward County, and Southeast Florida. Resilience requires active investment in planning and infrastructure, across City department, sectors, and our region with a focus on quality of life, services, and the economy. We are part of a "Ready Region" through the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, and the City regularly participates in the Broward Resilience Leadership Roundtable, and in the recent launch for a countywide resilience plan.

Recycle Your Holiday Tree at Markham Park in Sunrise

The free program requires Broward County residents to remove all decorations from their holiday trees (no decorated trees will be accepted), then bring the trees to a participating park - there are 12 of them - where they will be chipped and used for landscaping throughout the County park system. There is a limit of two trees per vehicle, artificial trees are not accepted, and no commercial vehicles or garbage trucks are allowed. Trees will be accepted through Monday, January 16, 2023 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), giving you plenty of time to take advantage of those after-the-holidays sales before hauling your tree to a park. And remember, the regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee will NOT be in effect for recyclers, so there's no excuse not to do the right thing!

Beyond Beauty and Grandeur, Birds Matter!

Help Birds Thrive by Planting Native Plants in your Yard

Native trees and plants outshine even the best bird feeders. From a bird’s point of view, native plants are the tried-and-true food supply for a nest of begging beaks and the safest place to call home. The relationship between birds and plants is deeply intertwined in a way that crucially supports local ecosystems. North American birds are disappearing from the skies at a shocking rate, and one of the biggest reasons for that is loss of habitat. We want to prevent a future of silent skies by rebuilding and beautifying our local landscapes, beginning with our homes and communities.

Audubon created a native plants database that you can use to get started in picking the right plants for your area (by zipcode).

Participate in the National Backyard Bird Count 2023

Join in, February 17-20, 2023, when the world comes together for the love of birds.

Where ever you are, take 15 minutes to notice the birds around you. Identify them, count them, and submit them to help scientists better understand and protect birds around the world.

No matter where you go, birds are present throughout every habitat across the world.

Birds play an integral role within a well-functioning ecosystem.

Birds pollinate plants just like bees and butterflies do! Many plants we use for food or medicine are pollinated by birds.

Birds are natural exterminators! Recent studies have estimated that birds eat 400-500 million tons of insects a year. We don’t want to imagine a world without birds doing the hard work of pest control.

Many birds play an important role as nature’s clean-up crew. Scavenger birds like vultures, crows, and ravens are natural sanitation services as they break down animal carcasses and vastly limit the spread of disease.

If that isn't enough to convince you that birds matter, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology lists five reasons why birds matter, and provide an analysis on the economic value of birds.
