At their regular meeting on May 20, the Board of Education thanked Tustin Toyota and Parts and Service Director Glenn Kashima for their generous support of our students. Through Tustin Toyota's Drive for Excellence program, they give one TUSD senior a new Toyota Corolla. After the drawing that evening, it was announced that the the winning student is from Tustin High School. We look forward to the Tiller graduation on Tuesday where we will learn the winner.
The Board also honored Barbara Benson Memorial Scholarship winners Zoe Carter, Ashley Lee, Grace Lin and Kailey Yun (Beckman), Edelweiss Pak (Foothill) and Sydney Madolora (Legacy). Each of these talented students was selected in support of their pursuit of arts education at a post-secondary institution.
The Board celebrated Ladera for their first-place win in the Boys Elementary Volleyball Championship. Joined by Coaches Jay Warren and Nida Beg were students Jackson Brock, Gunner Croft, Cory Donyluk, Brayden Fischel, Crosby Harper, Micah Le, Parker Liv, Harrison Semrau-Kuusela, Chris Singh, Steven Zein, Oliver Alefi, James Corless, Shray Desai, Derek Freeman, Jack Germain, Aston Hsu, Cayden Lee, James McMullen, Simon Soulanille, and Dylan Warkentine.
Beckman High School's Grace Lin was honored for her recognition as a 2024 Orange County Artist of the Year. Grace was recognized for her talents in Media Arts, chosen from the nearly 900 students nominated. Grace is one of only seven Artist of the Year selected, along with 27 finalists.
Danica Cho (Foothill) was recognized for her winning 2024 Dino Dash logo. Danica's design was chosen out of more than 200 submissions in the contest sponsored by the Tustin Public Schools Foundation. Her logo will be seen on t-shirts, race brochures, and materials for the annual Dinosaur Dash to be held on Sunday, November 3 at The Market Place in Tustin.
Following this, Mechanic Red Davalos from Maintenance and Operations was celebrated as TUSD's 2024 Classified Employee of the Year. Red was honored for his willingness to go above and beyond every day, making himself available to all with a need. His commitment and dedication to Tustin Unified, our students and staff is outstanding.
Lastly, Beckman High School Chamber Orchestra and Director Jim Kollias were celebrated for their remarkable achievements throughout the 2023-24 school year including superior recognition at the state and district levels, and performances at Segerstrom Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Carnegie Hall.
