NEWS TO KNOW

The Brief

At its meeting on Dec. 11, the Board of Trustees approved the 2024/25 Annual Education Results Report and received an update on the implementation of a Ministerial Order regarding school literary materials. For a full summary of the meeting, you can read the latest edition of The Brief.

Important Security Notice Regarding Read.AI

Staff should be aware of a growing concern regarding the Read.AI service. This tool is not approved by RVS and poses significant privacy and security risks. Read.AI follows users into online meetings, recording meeting notes and even taking screenshots without consent. Once it gains access to a user’s Microsoft or Google account, it can impersonate the user by sending emails on their behalf without their knowledge.

The service spreads quickly: if one user has Read.AI and attends a meeting, all participants may receive a message with meeting summaries. To view these notes, recipients are prompted to create a Read.AI account and grant permissions, continuing the cycle.

Currently, we are blocking messages from Read.AI to RVS mailboxes. However, users who have already granted access remain vulnerable, and the service continues to record their meetings. The Technology for Learning team will be reaching out to affected users. If you notice Read.AI following you into meetings, please contact Sharepoint/0365 Specialist, Alex Siedule immediately for assistance in removing the service and preventing further access.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration will open to families on Feb. 2. More information will be shared in January.

Teacher Placement Process

Teacher Placement Process information has been updated for 2026 and posted to myRVS. Highlights include:

  • All RVS teachers on continuing contracts employed in the 2025/26 school year may declare themselves surplus, thereby vacating their current assignment and ensuring transfer with the understanding they may be placed anywhere in RVS
  • All teachers on continuing contracts employed in the 2025/26 school year can request a transfer to a new location for the 2026/27 school year
  • The deadline for continuing contract teachers to be eligible to transfer is June 19
  • All open teaching positions for the 2026/27 school year will be considered for placement by HR before being posted

A posting called Teacher Placement (Job Code #3995413) on rockyview.simplication.com is open. All teachers currently on continuing contracts must apply if they are declared surplus or returning from leave. This posting is also for all teachers on continuing contracts if they wish to self-declare surplus or request a transfer. The deadline to apply is Jan. 30.

To apply for this job posting, a teacher must set themselves up as an internal candidate in Apply to Education – you can learn more about setting this up in the Internal Applicant Manual or by contacting your HR Recruiter. Questions about the teacher placement process can be directed to your HR Advisor

Indigenous Post-Secondary Student Awards and Scholarships

The Indigenous Post-Secondary Student Awards and Scholarships document has been updated and includes opportunities for high school students interested in funding support, as well as post-secondary, trades and apprenticeship pathways. We encourage school staff to share these opportunities with students and families who may find them helpful. Deadlines vary, so early exploration is encouraged.

INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICE

Problem of the Week

The Problem of the Week is designed to provide students with an opportunity to collaborate and solve mathematical problems, which complement the problem-solving portion of the numeracy block. Problems from various areas of mathematics are posted, or you can sign up for weekly emails for use with students from Grades 3 – 12. The problems vary in difficulty and cover a wide range of mathematical concepts, making it an excellent tool for both learning and enrichment.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Indigenous Perspectives into Math and Science Education

The Indigenous Learning team is offering a three-part series focusing on integrating authentic and relational Indigenous perspectives into math and science education. These sessions are led by Indigenous scholar and educator, Dr. Kori Czuy, who is the Relational Science Education Consultant and Manager of Indigenous Science at Telus Spark Science Centre. Participants will be guided through hands-on, land-based activities that align with and enrich the curriculum. This series will help educators better understand and create authentic connections with Indigenous math and science within their classrooms. This professional learning will be presented to a middle school (4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 12, Feb. 2 and Feb. 23) and a high school cohort (4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 14, Jan. 29 and Feb. 11). A light supper will be provided. Please come prepared for outdoor activities as part of the land-based learning components.

RVS RECOMMENDS

10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People

David Yeager

This week's recommendation comes from Cochrane High School Assistant Principal, Jason Ness.

Imagine a world in which Gen Xers, millennials and boomers interact with young people in ways that leave them feeling inspired, enthusiastic and ready to contribute – rather than disengaged, outraged or overwhelmed. That world may be closer than you think. In this book, based on cutting edge research, psychologist David Yeager explains how to stop fearing young people’s brains and hormones and start harnessing them.

An essential read for anyone who interacts with young people, 10 to 25 is a groundbreaking book that offers long-term strategies to help nurture well-adjusted, independent, accomplished young people who contribute to society in positive ways – all while making our own lives easier.
