Focus On: The Facts Behind Those Cleaning Myths

Keeping everything clean and disinfected is of utmost importance these days, but you shouldn’t rely on every housecleaning remedy your mother and grandmother said would do the trick. The truth is, many of them simply don’t work. Check out the facts behind some of those cleaning myths that you were told would work like magic.

  • Vinegar cleans everything – Because vinegar is an acid, using it on natural stone and wood surfaces will damage them. However, when used at full (or almost full) strength on safe surfaces such as stainless steel, vinegar can cut through dirt to kill bacteria. So, if you do use it as a cleaner and sanitizer, be sure to use a lot more than a capful added to a bucket of water.

  • Bleach also cleans everything – Bleach will lighten stains but does not clean anything since it does not remove dirt. On the other hand, it does kill bacteria which is why it is perfect for sanitizing.

  • Clean glass with newspaper for a streak-free look – Wet newspapers tear easily and the ink can transfer to window trim giving you more to clean than just the windows. Use Microfiber glass-cleaning cloths instead.

  • Hair spray removes ballpoint-pen ink – Years ago, hair sprays were made with a lot more alcohol which does, in fact, remove ink. But today the ingredients in hair sprays will only make the stain worse. So, don’t reach for the hair spray, but rather the rubbing alcohol, to get that pen stain out.

Presto! Just like that you have some facts about what really works when it comes to cleaning.
