Seeing our impact firsthand – reflections on my journey to India and Nepal as GoodWeave’s new CEO

It has been a whirlwind since stepping into the role as GoodWeave’s new CEO on September 1st. My 10-day trip to India and Nepal last month with Nina Smith, GoodWeave’s founding CEO and current strategic advisor, really drove home the impact of our work on the ground and the increasingly urgent need for interventions that protect the rights of vulnerable children and informal workers in global supply chains.

My journey was both thought-provoking and heart-warming, having had the opportunity to meet with children and adult workers who have directly benefited from GoodWeave’s programs and experienced truly life-changing results. I also met with our dedicated country teams, business partners, board members, and other stakeholders in India and Nepal who are working hand-in-hand with us to end child labor and worker exploitation. Here are a few highlights. Read more here.

GoodWeave serves as official sustainability partner at Decorex 2023

This year, GoodWeave served as an official sustainability partner for Decorex 2023, an interior design exhibition held in London from Oct. 8 to 11. GoodWeave UK’s Fay Handley and GoodWeave International’s Sonny Puryear attended and manned our exhibit booth in an effort to increase GoodWeave’s brand awareness and share about the positive social impact our licensing and certification program has on worker communities involved in crafting rugs and interior home textiles in India and Nepal.

With over 230 exhibitors and 13,200+ visitors, the event provided an exceptional platform to educate the interior design sector about the benefits of sourcing GoodWeave certified products. We also engaged with GoodWeave licensed partners including Edition Bougainville, Neptune, Wendy Morrison Design, Tania Johnson Design Ltd., Matthew Wailes (London) Ltd, 16Ten, The Rug Company, Deidra Dyson, Jacaranda, Romo Group, and Strandz.

Additionally, Sonny participated in Decorex's Design Talks series. He joined a panel discussion titled 'Sustainability Accreditations: Making It Easier to Understand the Jargon,' moderated by Rory Robertson.

GoodWeave International Generic Standard under revision

GoodWeave periodically reviews and revises our standards, policies and procedures to ensure their ongoing relevance and continuous improvement within GoodWeave supply chains. In 2022, we embarked on an internal review process of the GoodWeave International Generic Standard, and it was agreed by GoodWeave’s Executive Leadership Team that a full revision should take place.

As an ISEAL code compliant organization, this process complies with ISEAL’s Standard Setting Code and is guided by the Standards Committee – a group of technical experts representing a cross section of GoodWeave’s stakeholders. The revision process follows six stages, including two public consultations to ensure all interested and affected stakeholders can participate in the creation of a refined, more impactful approach to achieving our mission.

We are currently in Stage 4 of the revision process. Public consultations on the new draft standard are planned for 2024 and we will communicate opportunities for stakeholder input via GoodWeave’s social media channels and email. For more information, please visit our Standards Development and Consultations webpage and our 2023-2024 Project Description Summary.

GoodWeave and Fair Wear announce partnership to improve working conditions in apparel and textile supply chains

GoodWeave and Fair Wear Foundation have joined forces to address child and forced labor in hidden and informal parts of apparel and textile supply chains.

Under this new partnership, Fair Wear member companies sourcing from India are encouraged to become GoodWeave licensees and benefit from deep supply chain mapping and inspections for child, forced and bonded labor that reach beyond Tier One factories and into sub-contracted and home-based worksites where the majority of exploitation takes place.

GoodWeave will also serve as a knowledge partner for Fair Wear and as a resource for member companies on child, forced and bonded labor identification, remediation and prevention. Read the full press release.
