Permanent supportive housing webinars coming soon
A series on the evidence-based permanent supportive housing model kicks off 12-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, with a webinar presenting barriers and solutions to housing the aging homeless population.
Permanent supportive housing offers safe and stable housing environments with voluntary and flexible supports and services to help people manage serious, chronic issues such as mental and substance use disorders, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA.
Our first webinar will feature Dennis Culhane, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania. His presentation is entitled "The Emerging Crisis of Aged Homelessness: Could Housing Solutions Be Funded by Avoidance of Excess Shelter, Hospital, and Nursing Home Costs?". Attendees will:
- Learn about the aging of the adult homeless population due to the late baby boomer cohort effect;
- Learn about the health, shelter and nursing home costs associated with elderly homelessness and projected growth in those costs out to 2030;
- Learn about the potential housing solutions that could match the needs of this population;
- Learn about the potential for cost-offsets associated with housing placement and the potential ROI of investing in housing solutions;
- Learn about the partnerships that would be required to actualize those investments.
Additional webinars are on the way. To keep up-to-date, bookmark this page.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Marla Smith, M.S., LMHP, LMHC
Marla Smith is a trainer for the Mid-America MHTTC's serious mental illness program. Marla earned her master's degree in youth and family services from Bellevue University and is licensed in both Nebraska and Iowa as a mental health counselor. She joined our team in November.
"I am looking forward to building lasting relationships with those within the region to help facilitate change in how we work with those in need," she says.
Prior to her role with the Mid-America MHTTC, Marla’s focus was cultivating awareness of and providing education about clients identified as having complex needs. Marla coordinated training regarding behavioral health while also providing hands on coaching to those working with persons with severe mental illness in the habilitation and waiver homes throughout the nine counties of Southwestern Iowa. Marla is also the senior C3 de-escalation instructor for Southwest Iowa Mental Health and Disability Services.
She has learned over the years that it is essential to connect with the people she serves and communicate in a respectful and trauma-informed manner to help facilitate change.
In her spare time, Marla enjoys learning new skills, spending time with her family, and expanding her culinary knowledge.
