Balangandan
Brazil
The balangandan is a religious object typical of Bahia, Brazil. It consists of a number of charms that are strung on a chain. The balangandan can be traced back to the 17th century, but they became more popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Worn by women of African descent, the balangandan adorned the thick chain belts that hung about slaves' waists. When not in use, it hung in the house near the door. Each balangandan was unique, having been made to reflect the life of its wearer. The charms could include religious symbols of Christian origin, or they could represent certain African gods. Other charms were used for good fortune, happiness, prosperity, or good health. A third type of charm could demonstrate gratitude for having survived some misfortune, such as an accident or illness.
