Sermon on Sunday

Can We Be Good Without God?
Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness....Goodness
Here we are on the 6th fruit of the Holy Spirit:  Goodness. For some the word goodness conjures up such images as the Church Lady from Saturday Night Live; the living symbol of the hypocritical and judgemental but "good" Christian person.  It might bring to mind the image of the 1960's hippie, just wanting peace, goodness and justice for all.  Yet those images don't come close to the true definition of goodness as a fruit of the Holy Spirit.  For that we turn to Jesus the Good Shepherd as found in John 10.  So, can we be good without God?  Does it take God to be good?

To refresh your memory here is a review of the Fruit of the Spirit:
  1. Love:   The kind of Agape' love that expects nothing in return
  2. Joy:   Exhilaration and delight, regardless of circumstance
  3. Peace:   Contentment through conquest
  4. Patience:   Restraint without complaint
  5. Kindness:   The key to the door that unlocks God's Grace
  6. Goodness:  Stay tuned!

Guest Preacher: The Rev. Stu Boehmig

Stu became a Christian through Young Life at Frontier Ranch in Colorado when he was a high school student. He became an Area Director for Young Life before attending Gordon-Conwell in Boston where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Byington Fellowship in Systematic Theology and Hebrew.

After seminary he was the Executive Director of Ligonier Ministries under The Rev. Dr. R.C. Spoul and then was called to be Sr. Associate Rector at St. Stephens Church in Sewickley PA with Rev. Dr. John Guest and the Rev. John Yates. Along with nine other families, Stu planted Orchard Hill Church in Pittsburgh. Orchard Hill became one of the largest Episcopal Churches in America and later, as an inter-denominational church, grew to thousands of people in a variety of ministries. Stu is currently completing a Dr. of Ministry degree through Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena CA and Columbia International University.  Stu is currently the Sr. Associate at the Abbey Church in Pawley's Island, SC.

Stu is married to Susan (Albright).  Together they have five children.

Stewardship at St. Michael's involves gifts of time and talent, as well as treasure. We are a church with many ministries and these ministries are led by people just like you. We urge you to fill out the welcome card or simply drop a note in the collection plate to find a way to contribute to the church in a way you find satisfying. From youth activities to mission outreach to bible and prayer groups, you can make a real difference with your involvement.

Of course, stewardship also involves your Tithing Pledge which helps the vestry budget and plan the year. As a reminder please, complete your Pledge card for 2017.

See the proof here to check your photo submitted from previous photoshoots.

E-mail Vicki Vazquez your picture and we will place it in the directory for you or you can upload it by logging into St. Michael's Web Portal.

Move your mouse over the Home button and click My Profile, then click the pencil, then select personal photo, then click choose file and browse your computer for the photo you want to upload.
