"I'm very happy about this day and my decision to become a perpetually vowed Sister of Notre Dame de Namur," said Sister Gilllian. "My prayer is to bring out the good and to be the good in the world. This is a calling I've felt since my teenage years, and I know it is God's plan for my life.

Swan Song at Essex Street:

Lawrence Convent Closes

Pictured above: Sister Joseph Marie, born Rita Egan (1914-1992), principal of St. Mary's in 1963.

In early August, Sisters came from all across the northeast to visit 1047 Essex Street in Lawrence, Mass., for one last visit.

Since 1946, generations of SNDdeN lived in the convent while working in the nearby parish school and church. Some returned to see their old bedrooms while others came to enjoy the company and take home a souvenir – nostalgic items such as books, statues, plants and framed pictures that made the house a home.

Special thanks to Sisters Maureen O’Brien, Eileen Burns, Peggy Nelson and others who made it a memorable day for all. Read the full article in the upcoming Winter issue of Sowing Goodness.
