Goose marked yet another milestone in what is proving to be the most momentous year of their career thus far with the overwhelming success of their first-ever destination festival, Viva El Gonzo. Presented May 8-10 in San José del Cabo, Mexico by 100x Hospitality, the three-day event saw a vibrant array of powerhouse performances and immersive experiences from Goose and their star-studded lineup of special guests, all set on the Baja California coastline against the breathtaking backdrop of the Sea of Cortés. Goose showcased their awe-inspiring range and creative imagination over the course of seven completely unique sets, with countless highlights including surprising covers, expansive jams on beloved fan favorites, the debut of exhilarating new originals, and live renditions of every song from their acclaimed new album, Everything Must Go. All three performances are available to watch on demand exclusively via nugs.net through Saturday, May 17.

Thursday night’s opening performance was marked by effervescent takes on Everything Must Go’s “Lead Up” and “Your Direction,” the premiere of “Torero,” a dexterous and precise new piece featuring complex harmonized guitar lines and thunderous drums, and distinctive covers of Nirvana’s “In Bloom” (accompanied by special guest Mihali), Christopher Cross’ yacht rock classic, “Ride Like the Wind,” and their iconic interpretation of  “Fish in the Sea” by Fat Freddy’s Drop. The magic continued into the wee hours, with Goose’s Rick Mitarotonda sitting in with fellow Connecticut-based band Eggy for a buoyant version of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al.”

The next day found Mitarotonda keeping busy by joining Dawes for a joyous afternoon rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “Fire on the Mountain. Friday night then saw Goose deliver another headline set of staggering scope, featuring an expansive “Arrow,” a poignant, contemplative “Seekers on the Ridge” delivered in all of its two-part splendor, and the live debut of “Iguana Song,” the latter of which ignited cheers in celebration of something truly special.

Day Three saw Goose taking the 360-degree Round Rocks stage for a very special “aGOOSEtic” set, opening up with John Phillips’ (by way of the Grateful Dead) “Me and My Uncle” and followed by takes on Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U,” Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and The Wood Brothers’ “Atlas,” the latter two songs featuring a sit-in by virtuosic mandolinist Sierra Hull that saw her and Mitarotonda trading rapid-fire runs that brought huge grins to the faces of the musicians and audience alike.

The inaugural Viva El Gonzo came to a triumphant close with a masterfully curated headline show that saw an energized rendition of “Hungersite” seamlessly segue back into a spirited reprise of the set-opening “Pancakes,” plus the live debut of Everything Must Go’s “Dustin Hoffman” and a sprawling and layered centerpiece performance of “Dripfield” that expertly showcased Goose’s signature improvisational prowess. The encore saw a thunderous “Thatch,” with Goose’s Peter Anspach taking a moment to thank the festival’s team and attendees, sharing the band’s hope for Viva El Gonzo to become an annual tradition.

But the night didn’t end with Goose’s headline performance. Late-night sets continued across the festival grounds, with the El Ganzo Collective delivering an exploratory psychedelic performance featuring a guest appearance from Mitarotonda. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong followed, with standout collaborations from Anspach and Mitarotonda creating electrifying post-midnight highlights. Viva El Gonzo finally concluded in the early hours with a high-energy psytrance set from Goose bassist Trevor Weekz, performing as DJ Marb Menthols.

Goose were the undisputed stars of Viva El Gonzo, but were of course not alone in making the event an unforgettable gathering for all those assembled. The specially curated lineup further demonstrated the band’s wide-ranging musical interests with notable sets from such eclectic but like-minded artists as The War on Drugs, Tycho, LP GIOBBI, LA LOM, Dogs in a Pile, Andy Frasco & The U.N., Rivka Ruth, Shamans, Cordovas, and Everything Here Is Alive. All told, Viva El Gonzo represented a monumental moment for Goose, exceeding all expectations with its genre-blurring performances, pioneering approach towards programming, and inspired variety of once-in-a-lifetime experiences, promising future iterations that will continue to raise the bar for future iterations going forward.

Last month saw the long-awaited release of Goose’s new album, Everything Must Go, available everywhere now via No Coincidence Records. Goose’s fourth studio LP and first new studio collection in nearly three years following 2022’s critically acclaimed Dripfield, the album marks both a statement of intent for Goose as well as an arrival of sorts — a journey for fans and newcomers alike through the group’s past, present, and infinite future. Produced once again by D. James Goodwin, the album includes such extraordinary new tracks as the propulsive fan favorite, “Thatch,” the searching “Lead Up,” the breezy, atmospheric “Your Direction,” and euphoric first single, “Give It Time,” the latter two accompanied by official music videos streaming now at YouTube.

In addition, the deeply moving title track, “Everything Must Go,” is joined by a visually arresting official music video directed and designed by award-winning animator Chris Hopewell (known for his distinctive work with Radiohead, The Killers, Run The Jewels, Father John Misty, and many more). Made using traditional stop motion over three weeks in Bristol, UK,  “Everything Must Go” is marked by a striking sense of realness and authenticity ideally suited for the track, thanks in part to 90% of all the sets and scenery being fashioned from repurposed and recycled materials. All the trash and plastic waste used to build the sets was gathered in a beach clean near Bristol, then recycled after filming.

ABOUT GOOSE:

Goose is an American rock band known for its genre-blending sound, improvisational live performances, and dedicated fan base. The band is Rick Mitarotonda (vocals, guitar), Peter Anspach (vocals, keys, guitar), Trevor Weekz (bass), and Cotter Ellis (vocals, drums). Their music — a deft union of indie-rock hooks, sprawling improvisation, and driving rhythm — has propelled them from performing in Connecticut basements to headlining some of the most revered stages in the country. Known for their strong DIY ethos, Goose has grown organically through relentless touring and utilizing platforms like YouTube, Bandcamp, and nugs.net to share live performances and connect with fans.

Goose’s latest release, Everything Must Go is the first release since 2022’s critically acclaimed Dripfield. Everything Must Go marks the band’s evolution since its inception in 2014. Drawing from the feel of its live performances, the album features a carnivalesque cast of characters — primarily songs written throughout the band's recent years of growth, including re-imagined live staples and songs that capture the band’s evolving, dynamic sound.

Since their earliest days recording 2016’s Moon Cabin in a barn in northern New Hampshire, Goose has been developing their unique approach to writing and improvising, achieving a rare balance between thoughtfully crafted songs, tight musicianship, and emotional honesty. 2022 saw the release of their critically acclaimed third LP, Dripfield. That album earned them #2 on Billboard’s “Top New Artist Albums” chart as well as praise from Rolling Stone, who called it “both sweet headphone ear candy and the foundation for a perfect live peak.” The accolades were yet another feather in the band’s cap, having sold out venues like Radio City Music Hall, Red Rocks Amphitheater, Forest Hills Stadium, and headlined Madison Square Garden in the summer of 2025, performed on the likes of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS Saturday Morning, and played their share of iconic music fests, including Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and many more. Through their commitment to forward momentum, Goose continues to remind us that music isn’t simply played—it’s felt, lived, and shared.
