Students Visit Goosebay

We have had the pleasure of hosting two groups of students this month.

Manchester Communtiy College's class "Woodworking for the Arts" held a day of their class here.  They toured our facility and explored the variety of domestic and exotic woods that they could use in creating their term projects.

We also hosted 4H   members, parents, and leaders from the Bittersweet Special and Cross Country Kids 4H clubs.  Members ranged in age from 5 to 9 years old.  They learned how logs are brought in, tallied, sawn into lumber, kiln dried, and displayed for sale.
Each member will build either a birdhouse or a bat house.  Their projects will be displayed and judged next fall at either the Deerfield Fair or the Stratham Fair.

the creative process....
Mason's Handcrafted Furniture

Mason Walsh of Hopkinton, New Hampshire has found his special niche by building unique rustic furniture.  When you view one of Mason's creations, you have the feeling that it is "right," that it is made to a formula that has stood the test of time.  His pieces look like they may have been rescued from another time and place and re-purposed.

It is on closer inspection that you see that although rough in appearance, Mason's furniture is smooth to the touch.  And then you notice little things like odd-shaped wooden plugs, railroad spikes for handles, recycled hardware, and tree branches.

Then your eye starts to note that knots, bark inclusions, blue stain, saw marks and checks, all things that we try to avoid in our projects, are all woven into a cohesive rhythm in the patina of Mason's work.  Once again, every "imperfection" is part of the perfection of the pieces.

Mason doesn't limit his use of materials.   One piece can incorporate several species of lumber.  He freely admits that he often finds "just the right piece" in his discard bin.  He mixes heavy table tops with delicate metal legs.  He rounds out odd-shaped pieces with symmetric glass tops.

Let Mason's imagination inspire you - you can view more of his pieces online at his website (you can use the link below or at the top of this page.)    He also has pieces on display in our showroom.  Take a  look the next time you stop in.

West System
Seminar

Ben Gougeon from West System led two seminars on November 17.  The format was casual and the small group size led to lively discussion surrounding the use of the West System epoxy products.
Ben was able to address the specific project and application questions posed by each attendee.  In addition, he gave an overview of the product line.
If you were unable to attend, we plan to schedule another West System seminar at a future date.
