The academic year is quickly coming to a close, meaning graduation and summer fun are not far off! Communication among students, parents, and administrators can decrease the likelihood of hazardous situations during this celebratory time of year. MADD and Drug Free Action Alliance both provide great tools to help parents and communities talk with kids and teens about alcohol and other substances. The Gordie Center offers a printable Safer Drinking Guidelines brochure in our GORDIEstore, as well as information on the signs of alcohol overdose and how to help a friend in distress on our website. Help kick off summer safely by educating those around you and planning now for graduation safety!

The Gordie Center just wrapped up our GivingToHoosDay campaign--read on to learn more about the campaign and how donations make a difference in the lives of students nationwide!

Do you have a plan for National GORDIEday? September will be here before we know it, and National Hazing Prevention Week features National GORDIEday as a way to raise awareness about alcohol overdose and encourage students to intervene when a friend is in distress. For GORDIEday 2019, we will be running a contest to see how institutions are best using GORDIEstore items in their efforts--so stock up at the GORDIEstore and use our free GORDIEday Planning Guide to get the ball rolling! We also offer a number of free resources to make your events successful, and we would love to know if you are participating in National GORDIEday! Please register to receive a GORDIEsticker for your laptop and a pair of GORDIEsunglasses. Registered institutions will receive a follow-up survey after GORDIEday, and one lucky institution that completes the survey will receive a GORDIEstore prize pack!
Alpha Upsilon Delta of Chi Psi at Wake Forest University hosted a cookout last week that benefited the Gordie Center! They had a great turnout and raised $460 to support the Gordie Center's mission to end hazing and substance misuse among college and high school students nationwide. Thank you!

Thank You for GivingToHoosDay!

On April 9th, the Gordie Center participated in the University of Virginia's 4th annual 24-hour giving day, GivingToHoosDay. Thanks to 49 donors and a matching challenge of $15,000, we raised $29,735 to support Gordie Center programs in one day! The generosity of our donors continually amazes us--donors gave in honor of their friends and family, in memory of loved ones, and in support of our efforts at UVA and nationwide. Donations are critical to the work that we do, so a huge thank you to all who donated--we appreciate you!

Did you miss GivingToHoosDay? Never fear! We are thrilled to have your support all year long--visit our giving page to donate today!
Until next month,

Susie Bruce,  Director, The Gordie Center
