Raise a glass to the splendors of October...
October 2020
Hello Everyone!

Uncertain times need stimulating ideas. This summer and early fall, our guests have worked al fresco, others practiced outdoor yoga, one couple cooked 100% Vermont organic meals, another foraged for wild edibles, one forty-year-old guest designed her entire wellness program and helped us with ours! Three did our Adventure Wellness, and one dined on the fish they caught, and most everyone hiked over fifteen different trails. One couple is planning to work from home for six weeks at Pond Mountain Inn! The point is; everyone approached their time away from home much differently and were rewarded for thinking creatively.

The foliage is arriving 8-12 days early this year. Normally, peak foliage is around October 15. We'll likely see the best fall colors late next week.

All our very best,

Kay & Glenn

Fort Ticonderoga
Ticonderoga, New York
Our visit began with a thirty-minute outdoor lecture of the fort’s history and strategic importance. Experience the blend of history and natural beauty when you visit the fort! Explore 2000 acres of America’s most historic landscape located on the shores of Lake Champlain.
Quechee Gorge
Quechee, Vermont
The finest night photograph ever taken of The Quechee Gorge. At 165 feet deep it's the deepest gorge in Vermont. Easily seen crossing the bridge by car, we chose to park and walk the span. Only 57 miles from the inn! Woodstock is the perfect day-trip. Photograph taken by Abhijit Patil.
Fort Ticonderoga
Ticonderoga, New York
Living history demonstrations from carpentry to tailoring and shoemaking were on display during our recent visit. In this photo, the forged axe head comes from blacksmiths around the country, while each axe handle is made from locally harvested hardwood.
Perspective Comes from Encountering Something Completely New...
The Sagamore Resort • Bolton Landing, New York
The Sagamore Resort on Lake George is a landmark hotel with a prestigious history that dates back to the 1880s—secluded on a private 70-acre island. And, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A few weeks back, four of us had cocktails on the porch overlooking the lake a delightful way to view some early foliage. Lake George is a great day trip – click the photo for more.
Break of Dawn Somewhere in Vermont...
A gentle light and a hint of fog over the water, grass glistens and this Vermont lake twinkles in the first rays of sun. This time of day is exceptionally mesmerizing in Vermont, surrounded by some of New England’s most breathtaking natural wonders.

Many of our guests this summer did just this… and, so did we!
Connecting Our Guests to New Experiences…
Lake Eden • Middlebury, Vermont
New Hampshire Photographer, Abhijit Patil rekindles our desire to travel as we re-discover old favorites and explore new destinations—bringing you a taste of the spectacular fall foliage to you at home. Eden, chartered in 1781 to 72 Green Mountain Boys who fought in the Revolutionary War, hoped it would become “Biblical Eden” or a paradise to those that settled here— I’d say they got their wish.
Sleepy Hollow Farm Pomfret, Vermont
You’ll never see a better night photograph of Sleepy Hollow Farm anywhere! Sleepy Hollow Farm is a foliage icon and should not be missed. Pomfret, just ten minutes from the Woodstock village green has a population of less than a thousand. This pastoral masterpiece was captured beautifully by Abhijit Patil. Take a look at our Woodstock / Quechee Day Trip Itinerary—one of our favorite day trips!
Gifford Woods State Park at Kent Pond Killington, Vermont
Great hike with rich natural beauty—Kent Pond via Appalachian Trail is a 1.3 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Killington, Vermont that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels.

One person wrote, “We saw Kent Pond on the map a couple of days ago and thought it might be a nice place to stop, WOW, the sight that met our eyes was beautiful, the foliage mirrored in the still water was amazing, we stayed for a while and then took a walk beside the pond. We were so lucky to have great sunshine and arrive at a perfect time.” Another Magnificent by Photograph by Abhijit Patil; Thank You Again Abhijit!

President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site • Plymouth Notch, Vermont
One of the best-preserved presidential birthplaces in the nation, Plymouth Notch is virtually unchanged since the early 1900s. This rural Vermont village includes the homes of Calvin Coolidge’s family and neighbors, a general store, church, cheese factory and the 1924 Summer White House office.

If you’re lucky, your tour of the Coolidge Homestead will be with site administrator William Jenney—Bill has been with the organization for over 33 years and is the only full-time employee with help from seasonal staff and many volunteers. Thank you Bill for always spending time with us on our many seasonal visits!

Currently, the site oversees 25 buildings on 600 acres. Everything has been preserved as it was when the president lived there. It has been described as the best presidential birthplace in the entire U.S. It is the only birthplace that was also the location of a president’s swearing in ceremony.

Fort Ticonderoga • Ticonderoga, New York
We missed the musket firing demonstration at 11am; but we couldn’t miss the cannon firing demonstration three hours later. Listening to the brief lecture about 18th-century weapon technology and tactics before the demonstration was fascinating.

Our visit was especially poignant with the magnificent fall foliage nearing peak. Views from Mount Defiance were spectacular and are arguably one of the best in views in the northeast!

Fort Ticonderoga is in our top five “things-to-do” when visiting Pond Mountain Inn. Take ten minutes on their website to see all their incredible offerings. Photographer Justin Broderick captured the moment perfectly!
Mad Tom Orchard • East Dorset, Vermont
Yesterday was the last day of the season at Mad Tom. Our visit last week was extraordinary—we picked a variety of delicious apples and ran around taking all kinds of amazing pictures, which you’ll see in the coming months on our website. Saturday, we’re heading to Champlain Orchards in Shoreham for more apple picking. And, we’ll get over to nearby Mount Independence in Orwell for a quick hike that offers incredible views of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga! Photographer Justin Broderick captures Kay beautifully in the orchard...

Fascinated with Abhijit Patil’s work above, Abhijit and his wife will be here at Pond Mountain Inn next week... You'll see a lot more of Abhijit’s Vermont autumn photographs in our November newsletter!

Florida photographer Justin Broderick and his family spent the last five days at Pond Mountain Inn. With over a thousand photographs, the eight above seem just perfect for this month's newsletter. More next month, and they'll be back again this winter!
