Monday: A Prayer

(works on Tuesday too!)

by Will Willimon,

“Peculiar Prophet: Musings from an Accidental Preacher”

Gracious God, by your Son, Jesus Christ, in the power of your Holy Spirit, you call ordinary people to do some extraordinary things as ministers of your Gospel. Preserve us, dear Lord, from Monday morning fatigue and Monday morning despair; keep Sundaying in us, even on a Monday.

This Monday morning I praise you for the woman who had the guts to face down three obnoxious adolescents in a basement Sunday School room yesterday, to tell them about Jesus, just because she has faith that even teenaged boys are children of God.

I thank you for the gift of the teenager who stood up and read Scripture in her little congregation yesterday morning, not because she wanted to, but because she is the best reader in the church. Praise to the church that recognizes her gifts; praise to her for her willingness to use her gifts in her church.

Youth Punchwall Fundraiser Sunday

This Sunday after both worship services, the youth will be hosting a “Punchwall Fundraiser.” The wall will be manned by youth and will serve as SCAPC’s big spring fundraiser, helping to garner support for upcoming trips and retreats, as well as for our college ministry programs, small group Bible Studies, off-site bonding events, and Youth Group meals and curriculum materials. With various donation amounts and choices, the punchwall will allow you to contribute based on your interests and feel connected to the work we do with our kids. We hope you will consider contributing!

GiveNOLA Day: SCAPC Visionary Fund

Mark your calendars for GiveNOLA Day next Tuesday, May 6! All GiveNola Day donations to SCAPC will be directed to the SCAPC VISIONARY FUND which was created as a repository for endowment gifts, thus providing important financial support beyond the annual budget for certain congregational priorities, such as benevolences, music, Christian Education, and property needs. (Please note that these donations cannot be applied to Stewardship pledges and will not appear on your church statement. A receipt will be emailed upon donation). Early giving is open now! To learn more, visit our Visionary Fund page.

Graduating High School Seniors

Calling all High School graduates! We will be recognizing you in worship on Sunday, May 18. Let us know where you're heading next so that we can include your future plans in the bulletin and stay in touch as you enter this new phase. Please send information to camille@scapc.org by Monday, May 12.

Campus Ministry Potluck Dishes Needed

NOLA Wesley Campus Ministry, with which we are partnered, is hosting their end-of-year dinner for college students this Sunday night, May 4, at 5 p.m. at their Labyrinth Café, 7102 Freret Street. Volunteers are needed to bring dishes to feed about 15 students. Please drop off dishes to the café between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Contact Director Liv Thomas at 225-803-2635 with any questions. NOLA Wesley's mission is to nourish the spiritual life of college students in New Orleans through the formation of thoughtful and inclusive spaces including Sunday dinners, religious programs, and spiritual counseling. Sunday School Adult Classes

“Making Room: Celebrating Hospitality as a Christian Tradition” | led by Ashley Brown and Bev Church

April 6 - May 18 | Land Building Riverside Room | Recordings on Sunday School page

In this class, we explore themes of welcome, generosity, and the sacred art of making room for the stranger, challenging neighbor, the needy, and even those who may be difficult to embrace and welcome. Every class includes modernized lessons on hospitality by local expert and published author Bev Church. This Sunday's topic will be "Hospitality, Dignity, and the Power of Being Recognized."

“The Gospel of John” | February 16 - May 18 | Phifer Library | Recordings on Sunday School page

In its tone, structure, and portrayal of Jesus, the Gospel of John differs greatly from the other three gospels. It lacks the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord’s Prayer, and any parables. John’s story of Jesus is theologically complex, interweaving themes of light and darkness. He presents Jesus as originating “from heaven,” making him more divine that he appears in the other gospels. This Sunday's topic will be "The Farewell Sayings", led by Robert Edgecombe.
