Got Hearing?

Communication-wise, these 2 words can be life-changing.

If the answer is yes, precious sounds are treasured. If no, what opportune pathways should guide auditorily challenged individuals towards getting to yes?

On April 2, 2020, Practice Growth Insights issue #1 advocated for Communication Wellness

“Wellness is such a commonly used term. While frequently referenced in general terms, specific guiding principles can lead to healthier lives. With physical wellness, we think of exercise, counting steps, reps, or trips to the gym. With mental wellness, we ponder degrees of happiness, self-esteem and the power of positive attitudes. While physical and mental wellness are intuitively vital, we know there are dedicated experts who motivate devotees to improve quality of life. From professional trainers to physical therapists or psychiatrists to meditation and yoga instructors, wellness pathways are deeply personal.

“While physical and mental wellness discussions prevail, would talking more about Communication Wellness make sense?”

Listen up when John Maxwell says, “While everyone communicates, few connect.”

From a Stimulus → Response perspective, “few connect” in developing interdisciplinary partnerships with influential physicians. Beyond intuitive wisdom, there is considerable research on this whole person care imperative. Case in point, the MarkeTrak VIII study highlighted valuable reference points including:

People with either mild or moderate-severe hearing loss were more likely to discuss their hearing with their family doctor (43% and 50% respectively), followed by an ENT, audiologist, and hearing instrument specialist.

The most important social network influence is the family doctor; in fact, 1 in 5 people indicated they would be highly motivated to get hearing aids if their family doctor recommended hearing aids.

Ten Points for Industry and Professional Consideration

In reflecting on the non-adopter population and factors that would, from their viewpoint, expedite the hearing aid adoption decision, the following issues stand out:

Dearth of hearing testing opportunities. Close to half of non-adopters have not had their hearing tested in the last 10 years, had it tested as a child, or never had their hearing tested.

A decade later, Amplifying the Influence of physicians’ sound advice remain the crucible of Communication Wellness as medical awareness of Diagnostic and Treatment goals remains elusive. Further compelling our initiative should be Health Literacy necessity. 133 weeks ago (time flies …), we affirmed this public health policy aim:

Health Literacy is defined by the World Health Organization as “cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health. By improving people’s access to health information and their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy is critical to empowerment.”

Our April 16, 2020, issue presented excerpts from the noteworthy International Journal of Audiology article:

The Critical Role of Hearing in Health Literacy.

“All world health organizations would likely agree that access to information starts with being able to hear it, ask questions and understand the responses. In this regard, hearing-impaired patients are at a disadvantage. Clear communication is critical to hearing-impaired patients overall healthcare, making it even more important that hearing-impaired patients can easily access direct counseling and supplemental information.” 1

In contrast to hearing care leaders inspired by patient-centrism, prospective consumers AND their Doctors will encounter bewildering messages such as:

1 Nair EL, Cienkowski KM. The impact of health literacy on patient understanding of counseling and education materials. Int J Audiol. 2010 Feb;49(2):71-5. doi: 10.3109/14992020903280161. PMID: 20151879.

Anticipating physicians’ prompts, this high integrity handout proactively emphasizes their cathartic role in facilitating Communication Wellness.

When patients in due diligence phase are ready to discover which personalized hearing solutions are best for them, informative gatefold brochures will be a handy conduit to introduce decision-making criteria and your practice. Once again, Ask Us, Learn More™ is a constructive pathway for Physicians’ Candid Conversations about making well-informed decisions. Indeed, choice architecture should be made clear.

Next week’s focus is systematic methods to Embrace and Prosper via physician referrals catalysts. On Target, By Necessity.
