Gourneau Soars to Lead in Trainer Standings, Wins Five of Six Races on Wednesday

Trainer Jerry Gourneau served notice on Wednesday that he wants his sixth training title, winning an amazing five of the six races to power to the lead in the trainer standings, while jockeys Dario Dalrymple and Javaniel Patterson each scored hat tricks to signal they’re also here to win.

Gourneau also won a race on Tuesday to bring his total for the week to six victories, five of them for perennial leading owner Henry S. Witt, Jr., and one for former trainer Lee Delaronde.

Gourneau might have swept the card on Wednesday, but he didn't have a horse in the fifth race.

Naigo had a career that spanned 11 years. The bay was plagued with leg issues but gave it his all in every outing. He was bred by Kinghaven Farms and ran in the 1974 Queen's Plate. His trainer, Brian Palaniuk, described the horse as “goofy,” but he had class that others could only dream about. (Gerry Hart photo)

An Early Look at the Probable Field for the 2026 Belmont Stakes

The Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and the Preakness Stakes are in the books, so now is the time to shift focus to the $2 million Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets on June 6 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The marquee attraction is Golden Tempo, whose victory May 2 at Churchill Downs made Cherie DeVaux the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner. DeVaux and the bay Curlin colt’s owners, Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable, decided to bypass the Preakness and target the Belmont Stakes.

Napoleon Solo’s Preakness Mission A Resounding Success

Napoleon Solo, a bargain yearling purchase for $40,000 who had shown signs of distance limitations while fading to fifth in the Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park and Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct, was given another chance to prove himself at a distance of ground in the Preakness by trainer Chad Summers.

He delivered at 7-1.
