Hello Nancy,

Maryland Governor Wes Moore and his wife, First Lady Dawn Moore, helped Highland Beach celebrate the 130th anniversary of its founding.

In 1893 Charles R. Douglass, the youngest son of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, bought 26+ acres of farmland along the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis, Maryland.

He established a community... a summer haven for African Americans.

130 years later, Maryland's first African American governor came to Highland Beach to recognize that history. He talked about the community's significance during his comments at the anniversary celebration.

Museum Executive Director Jean Langston shares the governor's comments and offers her insight into the importance of his visit and the Frederick Douglass Museum and Cultural Center.
