News From Governance Matters and the NYCON Family of Services
Third and Final Session of "Health Coverage Decision Making for Nonprofits in a
Critical Year of Change" Series
On October 11th, we hosted the third and final session of our series on health care. The last session,
"Time to Choose: Preparing for Your Open Enrollment" was led by Peter Andrews, CEO of
Council Services Plus. This session covered alternative funding options, such as Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) through a case study of  A merican Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Altman Foundation. Our series, funded by  NY Community Trust   and hosted by  Philanthropy NY was a huge success. One participant had this to say: "When I signed up for the series, my organization was considering moving to a new PEO and we wanted to better understand our health insurance options. The session helps us be more informed about what options to offer our staff."

Ahead of the Curve 2017 Symposium
Governance Matters staff served on the steering committee for this year's   Ahead of the Curve symposium, a toolbox and inspiration for looking at opportunities and threats and how this impacts planning in an uncertain world. The  Ahead of the Curve Collaborative looks to strengthen the nonprofit sector through the merits of partnership. The event took place on Wednesday October 18th at  UJA Federation of New York and was funded by  JP Morgan Chase. The program consisted of a lively panel on how scenario planning can influence our understanding of risk and opportunity across funding, fundraising and advocacy work. That was followed by a small group learning exercise. Stay up to date on all of the Ahead of the Curve updates by visiting their website
