This Week in Illinois

Happy Masters Week everyone. Here's hoping your favorite golfer makes all the birdies this weekend and if you are looking to place a bet, Chamber member BetRivers has great odds. We like Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, and anyone not named Bryson DeChambeau.

Veto Session Canceled

The Illinois General Assembly has canceled the upcoming Veto Session citing the increased risk of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the numbers are alarming, undoubtedly the leadership challenge to the Speaker plays an unspoken role in the decision. Throw into the mix the total lack of any actual vetoed legislation and we were faced with the perfect storm for cancellation. The General Assembly is not expected to return until the Lame Duck Session in January.

Speaking of Leadership Challenges

Last week we brought you news of Senator Dan McConchie's elevation to Senate GOP Leader. This week we are pleased to report that Leader Jim Durkin was unanimously reelected to House GOP Leader. The Chamber is proud of the work Leader Durkin has done on behalf of the business community and we look forward to continuing our warm relationship.

Representative Underwood Pulling Away

The Associated Press recently called the 14th Congressional District for incumbent Lauren Underwood (D-Naperville). Her challenger, state senator and dairy magnate Jim Oberweis, is asking for a recount but the margin appears too large to overcome. This looked like a flip on election night but a robust vote by mail operation will return Congresswoman Underwood to D.C.  Sen. Oberweis will be replaced in the Illinois State Senate by State Rep. Karina Villa (D-West Chicago), who won the seat against her GOP challenger.
