Governor Northam Launches Return to Earn Grant Program with $1,000 Bonuses to Help Small Businesses Fill Jobs, Get Unemployed Virginians Back to Work
“Many Virginians who lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic still face a variety of barriers to returning to work like access to affordable child care, transportation, and a living wage,” said Governor Northam. “These bonuses will serve as an incentive for unemployed workers to get back into the workforce while also helping employers fill vacant jobs. The Virginia Return to Earn Grant Program is about empowering the true catalysts of our economic comeback—Virginia’s workers and small businesses.”
“Our criminal justice system has focused too much on punishment, and too little on grace and compassion,” saidGovernor Northam. “Putting people behind bars for minor violations of probation simply exacerbates the problem of mass incarceration, increases costs to the state, and makes it more difficult for people to rebuild their lives. This legislation marks an important step forward in our ongoing work to ensure Virginia's criminal justice system is fair and equitable.”
