Governor’s Proposed Budget for 2021-22
Governor Newsom released his 2021-22 proposed budget on Friday, January 8. In the proposed budget is an $8.1M increase to the CAEP consortia allocation. The 21-22 Preliminary CAEP Allocation Schedule will be released by the end of next month as part of the CFAD certification process due on May 2, 2021.

I-Best Training With The GOAL Consortium & Cabrillo College
Join the GOAL Consortium and Cabrillo College for a virtual I-Best training on Friday, January 15 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training Program (I-BEST) quickly teaches students literacy, work, and college-readiness skills so they can move through school and into living wage jobs faster.

I-BEST uses a team-teaching approach. Students work with two teachers in the classroom: one provides job-training and the other teaches basic skills in reading, math or English language. Students get the help they need while studying in the career field of their choice; they learn by doing. Download the flyer for more information and sign up today.

More Los Angeles County Adults Intend to Enroll in Higher Education than Adults Statewide
The California Postsecondary to Prosperity Dashboard, a data analytics tool from California Competes, shows how residents’ access—or lack thereof—to these institutions of higher education affects their futures. The Dashboard breaks down critical insights into the state of opportunity across Los Angeles County by race, gender, and other demographics, finding disparities among different groups.

Highlights from the analysis include the following:

  • Forty-four percent of Los Angeles County adults ages 25 and older intend to enroll in college in the next two years, which is higher than the state average.

  • At 56 percent, the region’s A-G course completion rate is higher than the state average.

  • While 88 percent of Native Americans and Alaska Native residents are employed, only 44 percent earn a living wage.

  • Homeownership rates for the region are 16 percent less than the statewide average, and who owns a home varies with race and ethnicity. More than 50 percent of White and Asian residents are homeowners, compared with just 32 percent of Black residents.

  • Los Angeles County residents are less likely to have health insurance than Californians as a whole, further exacerbating opportunities for economic mobility.
