The processional hymn, "Oh! The Golden Glowing Morning" was written in 1886 for the newly-established choir of men and boys at Grace Church, Utica NY, and has been used every Easter Sunday since. The composer of the tune, George Le Jeune, was born in England and studied music with Joseph Barnby. He moved to the United States early in his career and held several different church positions. In 1876, he was appointed organist at St. John's Chapel of Trinity Parish, New York City, remaining there until his death.
In 1995, Grace Church commissioned the prominent composer, Richard Proulx to create a new arrangement of this historic composition. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Richard Proulx (1937-2010) attended the University of Minnesota, MacPhail College of Music, the American Boychoir School at Princeton, and was granted a doctorate (honora causis) by General Theological Seminary of New York in 1994. He served churches in Minnesota, Washington State, and was music director 1980-1994 at the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Chicago. In July, 2006, Proulx received the American Guild of Organists Distinguished Composer award at the association's National Convention in Chicago.
Proulx was a member of the Standing Commission on Church Music of the Episcopal Church during the preparation of The Hymnal 1982, served as music editor for Worship III, as editorial consultant for the New Yale hymnal, and made contributions to recent Methodist, Presbyterian and Mennonite hymnals. He is a widely-published composer, both in this country and in England, and presented concerts and workshops throughout the U.S. and in Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Holland, Switzerland, and Canada.

Food Pantry: St. Margaret's Food Pantry is a mission of Grace Church. This ministry is for people in the downtown geographical area who are in need of food supplies. They stop in not only to satisfy their need for food but many also stop by for conversation and company. Our food pantry has a relationship with the Food Bank of Central New York and is obligated to provide a minimum of three days of food each month to individuals who seek our services. Due to the generosity of our parishioners at Grace Church, as well as the community, we are often able to increase the minimum requirement. During school vacations we provide breakfast and lunch bags for the children of our constituents, containing cereal, milk, bread, peanut butter, jelly, fruit and other items. In conjunction with the Food Bank of Central New York, we also sponsor demonstrations of healthy cooking and offer participants useful household gifts for attending the demonstration or vouchers to farmers' markets, when available. Whether it's donating food yourself or aiding our staff with pick up, organization and stocking shelves, St. Margaret's Food Pantry at Grace Church provides an opportunity for you to help alleviate hunger in the downtown Utica area.
Our Food Pantry now has a Facebook page. Click to learn more:

Thrift Store: Because we are starting some renovations, we are requesting that you don't bring donations in until we let you know when we will be able to accept them. Should you, or anyone you know need clothing or household items in an emergency, you may call the church office and we can arrange for someone to "shop" for you. During this renovation period, there may be sone Fridays we won’t be able to be open, but we will let you know in the bulletin and newsletter. | |
